CHAPTER 6: The Recording No One Was Supposed to Hear

CHAPTER 6: The Recording No One Was Supposed to Hear
The tension inside the penthouse became suffocating.
Five armed federal agents.
Whitmore.
Marcus.
Natalie.
Me.
One wrong move, and someone would die.
The lead agent stepped closer.
"Marcus Ellis."
"Put your weapon on the floor."
Marcus complied.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Whitmore watched with quiet satisfaction.
"It always ends this way," he murmured.
"Money doesn't buy justice."
"It buys timing."
Then...
My smartwatch vibrated.
One discreet pulse.
Marcus noticed.
His eyes met mine for only a fraction of a second.
Enough.
He knew.
The cloud upload had finished.
Everything Whitmore had said in my apartment...
Every threat.
Every confession.
Every admission that Brandon forged documents.
Every mention of the shell companies.
It had all been uploaded automatically the moment the internet connection returned through my cellular backup.
Whitmore didn't know.
Not yet.
The lead agent reached for the flash drive.
"I'll take that."
Marcus handed over...
The fake evidence case.
Not the drive itself.
The agent frowned.
"Open it."
Marcus did.
Empty.
Whitmore's eyes widened.
"Where is it?"
Marcus smiled.
"I thought professionals checked before making demands."
For the first time, Whitmore lost control.
"You idiot!"
He grabbed the agent's arm.
"Find it!"
That single action changed everything.
Every legitimate federal agent knows one rule:
No civilian touches an active arresting officer.
The room fell silent.
The lead agent slowly turned toward Whitmore.
Something shifted in his expression.
Confusion.
Recognition.
Doubt.
"You knew there was a flash drive?"
Whitmore realized his mistake one second too late.
At that exact moment—
Every phone in the apartment chimed simultaneously.
Mine.
Marcus's.
Grace's.
Even the agents'.
Breaking News.
LIVE PRESS CONFERENCE – U.S. ATTORNEY'S OFFICE
The video automatically began playing.
Standing behind the podium was not a reporter.
It was one of the eight senior partners from Sterling Point Capital.
Beside him...
The real Director of the Financial Crimes Task Force.
The director spoke calmly.
"Earlier this morning, Sterling Point Capital contacted our office after witnessing an attempted home invasion during a recorded board meeting."
Behind him, a large screen displayed Brandon forcing open my apartment door.
The recording continued.
His lies.
Margaret's shouting.
The locksmith drilling the lock.
Then—
Whitmore threatening my family.
His face filled the screen.
His own voice echoed through every phone in the room.
"I financed his ambitions."
"I used everyone."
"It buys timing."
The apartment became deathly quiet.
The lead agent stared at Whitmore.
"What..."
"...is this?"
Marcus answered.
"The recording you weren't supposed to know existed."
Another voice suddenly echoed from the hallway.
"Loud and clear."
Everyone turned.
More agents entered.
This time wearing different identification.
Financial Crimes Task Force.
Department of Justice.
Internal Affairs.
The man leading them held up a warrant.
"Daniel Whitmore."
"You're under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, and attempted evidence tampering."
He looked toward the first team of agents.
"As for the rest of you..."
He held up another document.
"...you're under investigation for possible participation in a federal corruption conspiracy."
The first lead agent went pale.
"You think we're involved?"
The Task Force director replied coldly,
"We're about to find out."
Whitmore looked around the room one last time.
His empire—built over decades through influence, fear, and money—was collapsing in real time.
Then he looked directly at me.
His smile returned, faint but chilling.
"You've won today, Olivia."
He leaned in just enough for only me to hear.
"But you still haven't found Brandon."
My heart skipped.
Whitmore continued in a whisper.
"And Brandon is the only person who knows where the missing two hundred million dollars really went."
As agents placed him in handcuffs, I realized the nightmare wasn't over.
It had only uncovered something far larger.
Thirty-eight million dollars had been the bait.
Somewhere beyond Brandon...
May you like
Two hundred million dollars had vanished.
And whoever possessed it had not yet made their move.
