CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE THAT CHANGED MY NAME

CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE THAT CHANGED MY NAME
The FBI agent walked past Richard.
Past Victoria.
Past Liam.
Straight toward me.
Every camera followed.
Richard blinked in confusion.
"Why is he going to her?"
The lead agent stopped exactly two feet away.
"Emily Carter?"
"Yes."
"I'm Special Agent Daniel Brooks."
He reached into his jacket.
Every officer nearby instinctively tensed.
Instead of handcuffs...
He produced a sealed federal envelope.
"I've been instructed to deliver this to you personally."
I accepted it.
The seal carried the emblem of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Elena looked surprised.
"I wasn't informed about this."
"You weren't supposed to be."
The agent's answer was brief.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a single classified memorandum.
As I read the first paragraph...
The blood drained from my face.
Elena noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
I looked up slowly.
"This..."
I whispered.
"...can't be right."
The memorandum contained only one sentence highlighted in yellow.
Your acquisition prevented the destruction of evidence connected to an ongoing federal investigation known as Operation Black Harbor.
Below it...
One photograph.
Old.
Grainy.
Taken twenty-three years earlier.
A charity gala.
Richard Richardson.
A much younger politician.
A federal judge.
Three executives.
And—
My father.
I stopped breathing.
Liam noticed the picture.
"What is it?"
I didn't answer.
Because I couldn't.
The man standing beside Richard...
Smiling...
With one arm around his shoulder...
Was my father.
The man who had died when I was twelve.
The man everyone had called honest.
The man whose company had mysteriously collapsed before his fatal car accident.
Special Agent Brooks spoke quietly.
"We believe your father's death was not an accident."
The marina disappeared.
The shouting reporters.
The flashing cameras.
The ocean.
Everything vanished except those words.
"What?"
Brooks kept his voice low.
"We reopened the case six months ago."
"Why?"
"Because someone started moving money that had been hidden since the year your father died."
My fingers tightened around the file.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
He glanced toward Richard.
"But your acquisition froze every account involved."
Richard's breathing became uneven.
"What is this?"
Brooks ignored him.
Instead he looked at me.
"There is one more thing."
He handed me a flash drive.
"We recovered encrypted emails this morning."
"From whom?"
"We haven't fully decrypted them."
He paused.
"But one message contains only six words."
I waited.
Brooks looked directly into my eyes.
"It says..."
'Emily must never discover the truth.'
Silence.
Complete silence.
Then, from somewhere behind the crowd, an elderly voice trembled.
"Oh God..."
Everyone turned.
An older woman stood beside the dock, leaning on a cane.
She had been watching everything from the beginning.
Tears streamed down her face as she looked at me.
She whispered only one sentence.
"She has her mother's eyes..."
Then she looked straight at Richard Richardson.
May you like
And screamed—
"Tell her what you did to her parents!"
