CHAPTER 5: THE JUDGE'S SECRET

CHAPTER 5: THE JUDGE'S SECRET
Every instinct screamed at me to run.
The three men moved toward us with deliberate confidence.
Not the confidence of men enforcing the law.
The confidence of men who believed they owned it.
The judge stepped forward first.
His expensive suit looked absurd against the dusty Tennessee countryside.
Yet his smile never wavered.
"Ryan Bellamy," he said calmly. "You've become a difficult man to find."
Emily grabbed my arm.
Her fingers trembled.
"We have to go."
But I couldn't move.
Not yet.
I wanted answers.
"You stole my daughter."
The judge chuckled.
"No."
His eyes shifted toward Emily.
"Your daughter was never mine to steal."
The statement made no sense.
"What are you talking about?"
The smile disappeared from his face.
"Ask your ex-wife."
I turned toward Emily.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
As though she had feared this moment for years.
"What does he mean?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"Ryan... please..."
"Tell me."
The judge folded his hands behind his back.
"Perhaps it's time."
Emily closed her eyes.
Then whispered something I never expected.
"Lily isn't our biological daughter."
The world seemed to tilt.
"What?"
The twins were mine.
The birth certificates proved that.
So how—
Emily's voice broke.
"When I was pregnant, doctors discovered something unusual."
My heart pounded.
"They found three babies."
The judge nodded.
"Continue."
Emily stared at the ground.
"The third embryo wasn't genetically related to us."
I couldn't comprehend what she was saying.
"That's impossible."
"It shouldn't have happened," she said.
"But it did."
Years earlier, during fertility treatments, a catastrophic mistake had occurred.
A laboratory mix-up.
A fertilized embryo belonging to another family had somehow been implanted alongside ours.
The clinic buried the error.
The records vanished.
The staff involved disappeared.
But someone eventually discovered the truth.
The judge.
And Tiffany.
The judge smiled.
"Do you understand now?"
Slowly, horribly, I did.
Lily wasn't simply a child.
She was evidence.
Evidence of a scandal worth millions.
Evidence capable of destroying powerful people.
The fertility clinic.
The lawyers.
The doctors.
The investors.
Everyone involved would go to prison if the truth surfaced.
Emily's voice shook.
"They offered me money."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"After Lily was born."
Fresh tears rolled down her face.
"They wanted me to sign documents."
The judge's expression hardened.
"But she refused."
"And then Lily disappeared."
My stomach turned.
The judge looked completely unconcerned.
As though discussing a business transaction.
"You should have accepted the offer."
Rage exploded inside me.
I lunged forward.
Before I reached him, one of the bodyguards slammed me to the ground.
Pain shot through my ribs.
Emily screamed.
The judge crouched beside me.
His voice became ice cold.
"Listen carefully."
He placed a photograph in front of my face.
A recent photograph.
Lily.
Playing in a park.
Alive.
Smiling.
Healthy.
My heart nearly stopped.
"Where is she?"
The judge stood.
"Safe."
"Safe from who?"
His eyes narrowed.
"From the people who are coming."
A distant engine roared across the property.
Everyone turned.
Another convoy of black vehicles was approaching.
Fast.
Very fast.
The judge suddenly looked worried.
For the first time.
And that terrified me.
May you like
Because if the judge was afraid...
Who was inside those vehicles?
