CHAPTER 6: THE FATHER WHO NEVER LEFT

CHAPTER 6: THE FATHER WHO NEVER LEFT
That evening, Claire spread every letter across her dining room table.
Hazel slept peacefully beside her.
Colonel Brooks sat across from her, having come after receiving Claire's shaken phone call.
He read silently.
Then looked up.
"This man never abandoned you."
Claire nodded through tears.
"No."
"He was erased."
Halfway through the stack, one envelope stood out.
It was thicker than the others.
Inside was a certified court document.
Richard Bennett had filed for visitation.
Three separate times.
Each petition had been dismissed.
Not because he gave up.
Because he had never appeared.
Claire frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
Brooks examined the paperwork.
Then he noticed something.
"Look here."
The hearing notices had been mailed to an address Richard no longer lived at.
Every one of them.
Someone had listed the wrong address.
Meaning...
Richard never even knew the court dates existed.
Claire slowly closed her eyes.
Someone had sabotaged him.
Her phone rang.
The unknown number again.
This time, Claire answered immediately.
A quiet female voice spoke.
"Hello... Claire?"
"Who is this?"
"My name is Evelyn."
There was a long silence.
"I'm your father's younger sister."
Claire couldn't speak.
"I've been trying to find you for years."
"You... you're my aunt?"
"Yes."
Evelyn's voice cracked.
"Your father never stopped looking for you."
Claire's heart pounded.
"Is he..."
She couldn't finish.
Evelyn understood.
"He's alive."
Claire burst into tears.
Alive.
After all these years...
Alive.
Evelyn continued carefully.
"He lives in Montana now."
"He still keeps your kindergarten drawing on his refrigerator."
"He still celebrates your birthday every year."
Claire covered her mouth.
"No..."
"Yes."
"And every Christmas..."
"...he hangs two stockings."
"One for you."
"One for Penny."
Even though neither daughter had spoken to him in nearly twenty years.
Claire whispered the question that had haunted her childhood.
"Why didn't he come get us?"
Evelyn sighed.
"He tried."
"He hired lawyers."
"He filed motions."
"He hired private investigators."
"He even moved closer for a while."
"But every time..."
"...your mother disappeared."
"New address."
"New phone."
"New school."
"And by the time he found you again..."
"...she had already convinced everyone you hated him."
Claire closed her eyes.
Everything fit.
Every missing piece.
Every unanswered question.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every silence.
Across town, Martha sat in her attorney's office with an ice pack on her wrist.
"I want an emergency protective order."
Attorney Steven Keller looked at her calmly.
"Did your daughter hit you?"
"No."
"Did she threaten you?"
"...No."
"Then what exactly happened?"
Martha hesitated.
"I grabbed her."
Keller slowly removed his glasses.
"You grabbed her?"
"She was stealing family property."
"The letters addressed to her?"
Martha said nothing.
Keller leaned back in his chair.
"I need you to answer one question honestly."
She looked away.
"Did you intentionally prevent her father from contacting her?"
The silence lasted almost thirty seconds.
Finally...
Very quietly...
Martha answered.
"Yes."
Keller closed the file.
"I can no longer represent you."
"What?"
"I'm withdrawing immediately."
"You concealed material facts."
"And if those letters are authentic..."
"...your daughter isn't the one facing legal problems."
For the first time in decades...
Martha realized the foundation of every lie she had built...
Was collapsing.
And somewhere in Montana...
An elderly man was answering a phone call from his sister.
Evelyn smiled through tears.
"I found her."
On the other end of the line...
Richard Bennett stopped breathing for a moment.
May you like
Then, with trembling hands, he whispered only four words.
"My little girl... lives?"
