CHAPTER 4 — The Daughter Who Refused to Stay Silent

CHAPTER 4 — The Daughter Who Refused to Stay Silent

The alley became completely still.

Richard slowly turned toward Tessa.

His eyes no longer held anger.

Only cold calculation.

"You talked."

Tessa stood taller than I had seen her in years.

"No."

"I survived."

Agent Brooks stepped beside her.

"For years," she said, "Richard Whitford used shell corporations to move millions of dollars through charitable foundations."

She looked at me.

"Your wife discovered it accidentally."

Tessa nodded.

"I was helping review paperwork for one of Dad's foundations."

"I found payments that didn't match anything."

"There were fake invoices."

"Fake construction projects."

"Money disappearing overseas."

Richard folded his arms.

"Baseless accusations."

Agent Brooks ignored him.

"Tessa copied several files."

"I was going to report him."

She swallowed hard.

"But someone inside his company warned him first."

Richard smiled faintly.

"I protected my business."

"You destroyed your daughter."

"I protected my family."

"You imprisoned me!"

Her voice shook with years of pain.

"I begged you to let me go home."

"I begged to see Jonathan."

"I begged to hold Miles."

"You told me they were better off believing I was dead."

Miles looked up at her.

"They said you were in Heaven."

Tessa dropped to her knees.

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I wanted to come home every single day."

"I counted birthdays."

"I imagined your first day of school."

"I wondered if you still slept with your dinosaur."

Miles quietly pulled a faded stuffed dinosaur from his backpack.

"I still do."

She broke completely.

Holding him so tightly it looked as though she feared he might disappear again.

I knelt beside them.

"We're taking you home."

She looked at me through tears.

"You still want me there?"

I laughed despite everything.

"I've been missing you for three years."

"You never stopped being home."

She buried her face against my shoulder.

For the first time since the funeral...

I held my wife again.

Behind us, metal handcuffs clicked shut.

Richard looked at his wrists in disbelief.

"You think this is over?"

Agent Brooks answered calmly,

"No."

"I think this is where it begins."

Richard looked directly at Tessa.

His voice was low enough that only we could hear.

"You still don't know what happened that night."

The words struck her like a physical blow.

She slowly lifted her head.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard smiled one last time.

"The car crash."

"It wasn't supposed to be you."

A wave of confusion swept over all of us.

My heart stopped.

"What crash?"

Tessa stared at her father.

"You told me Jonathan died."

Richard's smile widened.

"And that's only the first lie."

Every face in the alley turned toward him.

Even Agent Brooks looked stunned.

Richard leaned closer, his expression almost triumphant.

"You've all been asking the wrong question for three years."

He paused.

Then delivered the sentence that left us frozen.

May you like

"The woman buried in your wife's grave..."

"...was never the intended victim."
