CHAPTER 4 — “The Night They Came for the Baby”

CHAPTER 4 — “The Night They Came for the Baby”
The baby's cry pierced the house.
Lucy rushed into the hallway clutching her son.
"What's happening?"
Marcus pulled his service weapon.
"Stay behind us."
Another crash echoed from the kitchen.
Someone had forced the back door.
The alarm screamed through the house.
Outside...
three masked figures rushed inside.
One shouted,
"Find the kid!"
They weren't stealing televisions.
They weren't looking for money.
They had come for one thing.
Lucy's baby.
Marcus yelled,
"Police! Don't move!"
Instead...
the intruders ran deeper into the house.
One sprayed pepper spray toward the hallway.
Another swung a metal pipe.
I tackled the closest man into the dining room table.
Wood shattered beneath us.
He fought violently.
Years of construction work had kept me stronger than most men half my age.
I pinned him long enough for Marcus to handcuff him.
The second intruder bolted upstairs.
Straight toward Lucy.
She slammed the bedroom door and locked it.
Inside, she held her son tightly while dialing 911 with shaking fingers.
The doorknob rattled violently.
A heavy kick struck the door.
Another.
Another.
Splinters flew across the room.
The baby screamed louder.
Lucy backed into the corner.
"There, sweetheart," a man's voice mocked through the door.
"We just want to help."
Then—
BOOM!
The bedroom door cracked down the middle.
Before it could give way completely...
another shot echoed through the hallway.
Marcus had fired into the ceiling.
"Drop it!" he roared.
The intruder froze.
For one second.
Then he ran toward the staircase.
Waiting below...
were four uniformed officers who had arrived within minutes of the alarm.
The man was tackled before reaching the front door.
The third suspect escaped through the backyard fence into the darkness.
When detectives removed the masks...
my blood ran cold.
The first man was a private security contractor.
The second...
worked for a company owned by Regina's cousin.
Neither would explain who hired them.
But both had identical burner phones.
Marcus opened one.
The latest message had arrived only twenty minutes earlier.
It contained my address.
A recent photograph of my house.
One sentence.
"Take the child. No mistakes."
No sender name.
Only an encrypted number.
Marcus looked at me.
"They didn't come to scare her."
He looked toward Lucy, who was still holding her son.
"They came to kidnap a newborn."
By sunrise, news of the attempted home invasion had reached every major local station.
Oscar finally called.
Not to ask whether Lucy or his son were safe.
His first question was chilling.
"Did they get arrested?"
Marcus, listening beside me, smiled without humor.
"He wasn't asking about Lucy."
He slowly started recording the call.
"He was asking about his own people."
At that exact moment, Teresa's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Everyone looked at her.
She lowered the phone.
"The forensic lab just matched fingerprints from the forged hospital documents."
She paused.
Then spoke the name none of us expected.
"It wasn't Julian."
Silence filled the room.
"It was..."
...a senior hospital administrator who had been helping them for years.

And suddenly, we realized Oscar's family had never been acting alone.
The conspiracy reached far deeper than any of us had imagined...
