CHAPTER 6 — THE ROOM MY MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 6 — THE ROOM MY MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

The key fit a lock hidden behind a bookshelf in my mother's old library.

I had lived in that house for seven years after her death.

I had walked past that bookshelf thousands of times.

I never noticed the concealed door.

It clicked open.

Behind it was a tiny room.

Dust covered everything.

Time had stopped there.

Family photographs.

My childhood drawings.

Boxes labeled in my mother's handwriting.

And, sitting alone on a wooden table...

A video camera.

A note rested beneath it.

Alexander,

If you've opened this room, then Lily has forgiven you.

If she hasn't... stop reading and earn that forgiveness first.

I looked toward Lily.

She stood silently beside me.

"I haven't forgiven you."

She spoke honestly.

"But I don't want to hate you either."

I nodded.

"I'll spend the rest of my life earning it."

She said nothing.

Instead, she pressed Play.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

She looked weaker than ever.

But her eyes were filled with peace.

"My darling boy..."

"If you're watching this..."

"...then you've finally learned that love isn't proven by words."

"It's proven by who stays."

She smiled gently.

"Lily stayed."

"I knew she would."

Then her expression became serious.

"There is one last truth."

"The man you buried..."

"...was not your father."

My breath caught.

"He was your father's identical twin brother."

"Luis Reyes."

"He volunteered to take Richard's place."

"Because Richard had uncovered financial crimes involving powerful people."

"If they found him..."

"...they would have killed all of us."

The room went completely silent.

Everything I believed about my family's past crumbled.

My father hadn't abandoned me.

He had disappeared to keep me alive.

My mother continued.

"Richard has lived under another name ever since."

"He watched you grow from a distance."

"He attended your college graduation."

"He stood outside your wedding."

"He even came to your office opening."

"You never saw him."

"But he never stopped loving you."

A tear rolled down my face.

Seven years of anger...

Gone.

Replaced by grief for all the years we had lost.

Then came the final revelation.

"Lily doesn't know this."

"But I changed my will before I died."

"I left half of everything I owned..."

"...to Emily Parker."

Lily gasped.

"What?"

"Not because she was sick."

"Not because of pity."

"But because kindness should always be rewarded."

"And because one day..."

"...Alexander will need someone to remind him what truly makes a family."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Minutes passed.

Finally, Lily whispered,

"She believed in you more than you ever believed in yourself."

Before I could answer, footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Thomas Bennett appeared in the doorway, his face pale.

"Mr. Reyes..."

"I'm sorry to interrupt."

"What is it?"

Thomas looked from me to Lily.

Then he quietly said the words that changed everything again.

"I've just received confirmation."

"Richard Reyes has been found."

My heart leaped.

"Where is he?"

Thomas's expression fell.

"He's alive."

"But he's been kidnapped."

"And the people holding him have only one demand."

May you like

"They want the contents of Margaret Reyes's secret room..."

"...or they'll make sure your family loses another parent forever."
