CHAPTER 2 — The Knock at the Door

CHAPTER 2 — The Knock at the Door

The entire house fell silent.

Not the ordinary kind of silence.

The kind that settles over a room just before everything changes.

Three more knocks echoed through the front door.

Steady.

Confident.

Unhurried.

Lucas's face drained of color.

"No..." he whispered, almost to himself.

I watched him carefully. A man who had spent the last hour screaming, throwing furniture, and terrorizing his own family suddenly looked like a frightened child.

He knew exactly who was standing outside.

I walked to the door without saying a word.

When I opened it, a tall man in a dark navy suit stood on the porch beside a silver SUV.

His hair had gone gray around the temples since I'd last seen him, but his posture was still unmistakable—straight as a soldier.

"Barbara."

"Thank you for coming, David."

He gave me a brief nod before his eyes moved past me into the house.

Then he saw Lucas.

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Lucas instinctively took one step backward.

"D-David..."

The visitor closed the door behind him with deliberate calm.

"I wondered if we'd ever meet again."

Emily peeked around the corner, clutching Noah tightly.

She looked confused.

"Mom... who is this?"

I placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"This is David Mercer."

Lucas shut his eyes.

He already knew there was no point pretending.

David wasn't a police officer.

He wasn't a lawyer.

He was Lucas's former commanding officer.

Years ago, before Lucas left the Army under circumstances few people knew about, David had been the man responsible for evaluating every complaint filed against soldiers in his unit.

And Lucas had accumulated more than one.

David folded his hands behind his back.

"I've received your mother's call."

Lucas forced a laugh.

"This is a family matter."

David's voice never rose.

"No."

"It stopped being a family matter when a terrified child was forced to watch his father threaten his mother."

Noah buried his face in Emily's side.

David noticed.

"So that's your son."

Lucas swallowed.

"He doesn't understand."

David looked directly at the boy.

"I understand enough."

The room felt colder.

Lucas tried another tactic.

"Barbara exaggerated everything."

I interrupted him.

"Did I exaggerate the ripped photographs outside?"

"No."

"The broken dishes?"

"No."

"The holes in the hallway wall?"

Lucas looked away.

David slowly walked through the living room.

Nothing escaped his attention.

The shattered picture frame.

The overturned coffee table.

The smashed lamp.

Emily's bruised wrist.

He stopped.

"Emily."

She looked nervous.

"Has he ever hurt you before today?"

Lucas shouted immediately.

"Don't answer that!"

David turned his head.

"I wasn't speaking to you."

Emily hesitated.

Her hands trembled.

Finally she whispered...

"Yes."

One word.

Barely audible.

But it changed everything.

Lucas exploded.

"She's lying!"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"The first time was after Noah turned three."

My heart stopped.

She had never told me.

Not once.

Tears rolled down her face.

"I kept thinking he'd change."

"He always apologized."

"He always bought flowers."

"He always promised it would never happen again."

David remained expressionless.

"And did it?"

Emily lowered her eyes.

"No."

Lucas pointed wildly.

"She provoked me!"

David's stare became ice.

"I've heard that sentence too many times."

Lucas's breathing became uneven.

"You don't know our marriage."

"No," David replied quietly.

"But I know patterns."

He stepped toward the hallway.

On the wall were several fist-sized holes hidden behind decorative shelves that had recently been moved.

David gently removed one picture frame.

Another cracked hole appeared beneath it.

He didn't say anything.

He didn't need to.

Emily gasped.

"I forgot that one was still there..."

David looked back at Lucas.

"So you've been repairing the walls."

Lucas remained silent.

"And teaching your wife to hide the evidence."

Still silence.

Noah suddenly spoke.

"Daddy says if Mommy tells Grandma, we'll lose our house."

Every adult in the room froze.

Children don't know when they're revealing secrets.

They simply tell the truth.

Lucas looked horrified.

"Noah..."

The little boy flinched.

David knelt until he was eye level with him.

"You've been very brave."

Noah wiped his eyes.

"I don't want Daddy to yell anymore."

Emily collapsed onto the couch, crying openly now.

Years of fear were finally pouring out.

I wrapped my arms around her.

"You don't have to protect him anymore."

Lucas grabbed the divorce papers from the table.

"Fine!"

"You all win!"

"I'll leave!"

He marched toward the front door.

David blocked his path with one calm step.

"You're forgetting something."

Lucas frowned.

"What?"

"The house."

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"It's mine."

That was when I reached into my purse.

I removed a thick manila envelope that I had carried for years without ever expecting to use it.

I handed it to David.

He opened it.

Inside were property records.

Mortgage statements.

Trust documents.

David looked up.

"Interesting."

Lucas frowned.

"What is?"

David turned the first page around so Lucas could read the heading.

PROPERTY TITLE

OWNER OF RECORD:

BARBARA ANN CARTER FAMILY TRUST

Lucas blinked.

Then blinked again.

"No..."

Emily stared at me.

"Mom..."

I took a slow breath.

"After your father died, I helped you and Lucas buy this house."

"You both believed I simply 'loaned' the down payment."

Lucas's mouth slowly opened.

I continued.

"I didn't."

"I purchased the property through my family trust until the loan was repaid."

Emily looked completely stunned.

"You never told us..."

"You insisted on paying what you thought was a mortgage."

I nodded.

"And every payment has been documented."

Lucas snatched the papers.

"This can't be real!"

David calmly replied,

"It is."

Lucas flipped page after page.

His hands began shaking.

"If the trust owns the house..."

I finished the sentence for him.

"...then you don't."

For the first time that afternoon...

May you like

Lucas had absolutely nowhere left to stand.
