CHAPTER 3 – THE FALL OF A GOLDEN SON

CHAPTER 3 – THE FALL OF A GOLDEN SON

At exactly 8:55 the next morning, every executive inside Rivers Industries noticed something unusual.

The elevator reserved exclusively for Cameron Rivers had already arrived.

He was never early.

Today, he was.

Employees exchanged nervous glances as Cameron crossed the marble lobby without acknowledging anyone. His expression was unreadable, but the silence surrounding him was heavier than any outburst.

Behind him walked Jennifer, the company's chief legal counsel, followed by six members of the corporate compliance team.

No one carried coffee.

No one made small talk.

Everyone understood something serious was about to happen.

On the forty-second floor, Derek Rivers adjusted his tie as he prepared for the quarterly executive meeting.

He barely slept.

Cameron's phone call from the night before kept replaying in his head.

Pack your office.

His older brother had always been intense.

Demanding.

Uncompromising.

But firing family?

That wasn't Cameron.

Or at least, that wasn't the Cameron Derek thought he knew.

When the boardroom doors opened, Derek forced a confident smile.

"Morning, everyone."

No one answered.

Several executives quietly avoided eye contact.

The atmosphere felt...different.

Jennifer entered.

"Mr. Rivers," she said professionally.

"The Chairman requests your presence in Conference Room A."

Derek frowned.

"Why there?"

"You'll understand shortly."

Conference Room A wasn't arranged for a meeting.

It looked like a courtroom.

Cameron stood at one end of the long table.

Beside him sat the company's outside counsel.

Two compliance officers.

The head of Human Resources.

And Gabrielle Thompson.

Derek stopped walking.

"What is she doing here?"

Gabrielle looked directly at him.

"I'm here for my sister."

Derek laughed awkwardly.

"Cam...what is this?"

Cameron didn't invite him to sit.

Instead, he pressed a button on the remote.

The screen behind him lit up.

Private Jet Security Footage.

Derek's face immediately drained of color.

"No..."

The recording played.

Every executive watched.

No interruptions.

No edits.

Only truth.

Tiffany mocking Simone.

Tiffany grabbing her hair.

Simone begging.

The flight attendant intervening.

And Derek...

Doing absolutely nothing.

The room remained silent until the video ended.

Cameron finally spoke.

"Would anyone here like to explain how the Executive Vice President of Rivers Industries watched his pregnant wife being assaulted and failed to intervene?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Derek swallowed hard.

"Cam...it's complicated."

"No."

Cameron's voice cut through the room.

"It isn't."

"You humiliated your wife."

"You endangered your unborn daughter."

"You ignored an assault."

"And by doing so while representing this company, you created catastrophic reputational risk."

Derek looked around desperately.

"It was a personal matter."

Jennifer slid several documents across the table.

"Not anymore."

She opened the first file.

"Violation of Executive Ethics Policy."

Second file.

"Conduct damaging to shareholder confidence."

Third file.

"Immediate termination recommendation."

Derek stared in disbelief.

"You can't fire me."

Cameron met his eyes.

"I already have."

Jennifer calmly pushed another document forward.

"Your company access has been revoked."

Another.

"Your executive authority has been suspended."

Another.

"Your stock options are frozen pending internal review."

Derek looked like the air had been sucked from his lungs.

"You planned this."

"No," Cameron replied.

"You planned this."

"The moment you chose silence."

Outside the building, financial reporters suddenly gathered near the entrance.

Rumors spread through downtown Chicago within minutes.

Senior Rivers Executive Removed.

No explanation.

No statement.

Just one shocking development after another.

Inside his office, Derek tried logging into the company network.

ACCESS DENIED.

He tried his executive keycard.

The office door flashed red.

ACCESS REVOKED.

He turned toward the security guard standing nearby.

"You know who I am."

"Yes, sir."

"Then let me inside."

The guard lowered his eyes respectfully.

"I've been instructed not to."

Derek stood frozen.

For twenty years...

He had entered this building as a Rivers.

Today...

He walked out carrying a cardboard box.

Employees watched silently.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody comforted him.

The golden son had fallen.

That afternoon, Cameron drove somewhere he hadn't visited in months.

Mercy Women's Medical Center.

Simone sat quietly inside the obstetrics clinic waiting for another ultrasound.

She assumed she was alone.

Until someone gently knocked on the partially open door.

She looked up.

"Cameron?"

He stepped inside holding a small white gift bag.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

She shook her head.

"What are you doing here?"

He placed the bag beside her.

Inside was a tiny pink teddy bear.

And a handwritten note.

Every little girl deserves to know there are good men in her family.

Simone's eyes instantly filled with tears.

"You didn't have to do this."

"I know."

He hesitated before speaking again.

"But I should have done something much sooner."

For the first time since boarding that private jet...

Someone apologized.

Not because they were guilty.

Because they cared.

Simone quietly wiped away her tears.

"Thank you."

Before Cameron could answer, the examination room door burst open.

The nurse's face had gone pale.

"Mrs. Rivers..."

She looked terrified.

May you like

"We need the doctor."

"Now."
