CHAPTER 2 The Truth Laura Tried to Protect

Sofia sat beside Oliver on the garden bench.

The boy's eyes remained fixed on the ground.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then Oliver whispered something that made her heart stop.

"Victoria hated my mom."

Sofia frowned.

"What?"

Oliver looked up.

His eyes were full of tears.

"She used to come to our house before Mom got sick."

A chill moved through Sofia's body.

Before Laura got sick?

That didn't make sense.

Victoria had always told everyone she met Ethan two years after Laura's death.

Everyone believed it.

Even Ethan.

"What do you mean?" Sofia asked gently.

Oliver hesitated.

Then reached into his backpack.

From the bottom, he pulled out a small wooden box.

The corners were worn.

The lock was broken.

Clearly old.

"My mom gave me this."

Sofia carefully opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Receipts.

Documents.

And one picture that

.And one picture that made Sofia stop breathing.

Victoria stood beside Ethan.

Smiling.

The photograph was dated four years ago.

One year before Laura died.

Sofia looked at Oliver.

"Are you sure about this?"

The boy nodded.

"I found it in Mom's room."

His voice trembled.

"She cried after she saw them together."

Sofia felt a chill run through her body.

"What else did your mother say?"

Oliver hesitated.

Then reached deeper into the box.

Beneath the photographs sat a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were four words:

For Ethan. If Necessary.

Sofia stared.

This wasn't an ordinary keepsake.

This was a warning.

That evening Ethan returned home exhausted.

The meeting with his attorneys had lasted hours.

Victoria's departure had already created problems.

She was threatening lawsuits.

Making accusations.

Trying desperately to save her reputation.

But Ethan barely listened.

His thoughts remained fixed on Oliver.

Something felt wrong.

Something he had missed.

When he entered his office, Sofia was waiting.

The wooden box sat on his desk.

Ethan frowned.

"What is this?"

Sofia looked nervous.

"Oliver asked me to give it to you."

The moment Ethan saw the box, his expression changed.

He recognized it immediately.

Laura's memory box.

The one she always kept locked.

His pulse quickened.

Slowly he opened it.

The photographs appeared first.

Then the letters.

Then the envelope.

His hands froze.

Because he recognized Laura's handwriting.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Sofia quietly stepped back.

"Ethan..."

He didn't answer.

Carefully he opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

And as he began reading, the color drained from his face.

My Dearest Ethan,

If you're reading this, then something has happened.

Something I hoped never would.

There are truths I wanted to tell you myself.

But I was afraid.

Afraid of hurting you.

Afraid of destroying our family.

Most of all, afraid that I was wrong.

Ethan's heart pounded.

He continued reading.

Three years ago, I discovered that Victoria Hayes had been contacting you privately.

At first I believed it was professional.

Then I found messages.

Dinner invitations.

Conversations you never mentioned.

Nothing inappropriate.

Not yet.

But something felt wrong.

A knot formed in Ethan's stomach.

Because he remembered.

Back then Victoria worked as a consultant for one of his companies.

Laura continued.

I hired an investigator.

What he discovered frightened me.

Victoria did not approach you by accident.

She researched you.

Studied our family.

Learned our routines.

And then deliberately placed herself into your world.

Ethan stopped breathing.

No.

Impossible.

But deep down...

He already knew.

Because the investigator he hired weeks earlier had discovered the same thing.

Laura had known years ago.

Years.

He continued reading.

I confronted her once.

She smiled.

Then told me something I will never forget.

She said that one day this family would belong to her.

And there would be nothing I could do to stop it.

The letter shook in Ethan's hands.

Sofia watched silently.

Every word felt darker than the last.

Then came the revelation that changed everything.

I don't believe Victoria wanted you.

I believe she wanted what came with you.

Your name.

Your companies.

Your future.

And if anything ever happened to me, I feared she would try again.

A cold silence filled the room.

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

His hands trembled.

Laura had seen it all.

Years before anyone else.

And he had never listened.

The next morning brought another shock.

Ethan's investigator called.

"Sir, we found something."

"What?"

The man hesitated.

Then answered carefully.

"Victoria wasn't acting alone."

Ethan froze.

"What do you mean?"

"We traced several financial transfers."

His pulse accelerated.

"There appears to be another person involved."

"Who?"

The investigator paused.

Then spoke a name Ethan hadn't heard in years.

Michael Reeves.

The name hit him like a punch.

Michael Reeves had once been Ethan's business partner.

Until he was fired for fraud.

Until he lost everything.

Until he swore revenge.

"No..."

Ethan whispered.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Victoria.

The manipulation.

The timing.

The obsession.

This wasn't a romance.

It was an operation.

Years in the making.

And Ethan had nearly married the woman sent to destroy him.

Meanwhile, Victoria sat inside a luxury hotel suite.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"What now?"

A male voice replied.

Cold.

Angry.

"You failed."

Victoria clenched her jaw.

"Things changed."

"They weren't supposed to."

The man sounded furious.

"Ethan was supposed to marry you months ago."

Victoria looked toward the window.

For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.

"I didn't expect the maid."

Silence.

Then a laugh.

A dangerous laugh.

"Then get rid of the problem."

Victoria's face went pale.

"What?"

"You heard me."

The line disconnected.

Victoria stared at the phone.

Terrified.

Because she finally understood something.

She wasn't a partner.

She was disposable.

And now someone far more dangerous than Ethan was angry with her.

That night Sofia left the mansion after finishing work.

Rain poured from the sky.

The streets were nearly empty.

She walked toward the bus stop.

Then heard footsteps behind her.

Slow.

Steady.

Following.

Her heart began racing.

She turned.

Nobody.

Only darkness.

Only rain.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

Stop asking questions about Victoria.

Sofia froze.

Another message appeared.

Or you'll end up exactly like Laura.

The blood drained from her face.

Because suddenly this wasn't about workplace bullying.

It wasn't about a broken engagement.

It wasn't even about money.

Somebody knew what happened before Laura died.

Somebody was willing to threaten anyone who got close to the truth.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness, a secret Laura had tried desperately to protect was finally beginning to surface.
