Chapter 2

Chapter 2
The first shot shattered the bakery window before anyone moved.
Glass exploded inward in a glittering storm, showering the display of wedding cakes with razor-sharp crystals. Nora screamed for the first time since Julian had walked through the door.
"Kitchen!" Julian barked.
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
It was the voice of a man accustomed to being obeyed while bullets were flying.
Elena scooped Nora into her arms and sprinted toward the kitchen just as another shot tore through the front counter, blasting apart jars of pastel sprinkles into clouds of pink and blue dust.
Julian never looked back.
He pulled a pistol from beneath his coat with the effortless motion of muscle memory.
The bell above the bakery door jingled once.
Then the front door burst inward.
Corsaro entered smiling.
Gray hair.
Scar beneath his jaw.
Elegant charcoal suit.
Three armed men followed behind him.
He glanced around the ruined bakery as though inspecting an expensive restaurant.
"What a shame," he sighed.
"So much talent."
His eyes settled on Julian.
"I told your father sentiment would ruin you."
Julian aimed directly between the old man's eyes.
"You threatened my wife."
Corsaro smiled wider.
"Former wife."
"You threatened my daughter."
That smile disappeared.
"So," Corsaro murmured.
"You know."
"I know enough."
"No."
The old adviser folded his hands behind his back.
"You know almost nothing."
Another pair of armed men slipped through the shattered doorway.
Julian counted six.
Probably more outside.
He couldn't win a firefight.
Not here.
Not with Elena and Nora trapped in the kitchen.
Corsaro slowly walked toward the half-finished engagement cake.
He studied it.
"So beautiful."
Then he casually pushed it onto the floor.
The four-tier masterpiece smashed into hundreds of pieces.
Cream splattered across the marble.
Sugar roses rolled beneath Julian's shoes.
"I've always hated wedding cakes," Corsaro said.
"They celebrate promises."
"I prefer power."
Julian's finger tightened on the trigger.
"You've got five seconds."
Corsaro laughed.
"If you shoot me, every sniper outside has orders to kill Elena first."
Silence.
Julian's eyes never left him.
"You prepared this."
"For four years."
Corsaro nodded proudly.
"I prepared everything."
He looked around the bakery.
"I arranged your marriage."
"I arranged your divorce."
"I arranged your engagement."
"And now..."
He smiled.
"...I shall arrange your funeral."
Behind the kitchen door, Elena pressed Nora against her chest.
She forced herself to stay quiet.
But Nora whispered,
"Mommy..."
"Why are the bad men yelling?"
Elena kissed her daughter's hair.
"It's going to be okay."
She wasn't sure whether she was comforting Nora...
...or herself.
Outside the bakery, tires screeched.
One.
Two.
Six black SUVs surrounded the block.
Corsaro didn't react.
He expected them.
His own reinforcements.
But then every vehicle door opened simultaneously.
Men in black tactical suits stepped out.
Not Corsaro's men.
Julian recognized them instantly.
Varro Security Division.
His personal protection unit.
Their commander raised a rifle.
"Boss!"
"We finally tracked your signal!"
Corsaro frowned.
"Impossible."
Julian smiled for the first time.
"I disabled my location years ago."
He looked directly into Corsaro's eyes.
"But this morning..."
His smile grew colder.
"...I turned it back on."
Corsaro understood.
Julian had suspected something before entering the bakery.
He hadn't come completely unprepared.
Outside, dozens of rifles aimed toward the storefront.
The bakery had become a battlefield.
Corsaro's expression remained calm.
"Do you truly think they'll fire?"
"They won't risk killing your daughter."
Julian answered quietly.
"They won't have to."
Before Corsaro could react—
The bakery lights went dark.
Complete blackness.
Every display case.
Every ceiling lamp.
Every security light.
Someone had cut the power.
A deafening flashbang exploded through the broken window.
White light.
Thunderous sound.
Corsaro's men staggered blindly.
Julian didn't.
He had already closed his eyes.
Three shots echoed.
One.
Two.
Three.
A body hit the floor.
Another screamed.
Someone crashed into the pastry shelves.
Flour erupted into the air like white smoke.
When emergency lights flickered on seconds later...
Corsaro was gone.
So were two of his guards.
Only blood remained where they had stood.
Julian cursed under his breath.
"He planned an escape route."
Outside, tires screamed into the night.
The old adviser had escaped.
Again.
The commander of Julian's security team rushed inside.
"Boss!"
"We've secured the perimeter."
Julian ignored him.
Instead, he ran toward the kitchen.
"Elena!"
The kitchen door opened slowly.
Elena stepped out holding Nora.
Neither was hurt.
The little girl looked around the destroyed bakery with enormous green eyes.
Her gaze landed on Julian.
"You came back."
He knelt despite the broken glass covering the floor.
"I promised your mommy I'd protect you."
Nora studied him for several long seconds.
Then she asked the question that froze everyone in the room.
"Are you my daddy?"
No gunshot.
No explosion.
No threat from Corsaro...
...had ever struck Julian as deeply as those four simple words.
His throat tightened.
He couldn't answer.
He simply nodded once.
Very slowly.
Nora looked at him.
Then at Elena.
"You knew?"
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes, sweetheart."
The little girl was silent.
Everyone waited.
Finally...
She walked across the shattered bakery floor.
Wrapped her tiny arms around Julian's neck.
And whispered,
"I drew you before I even met you."
Julian closed his eyes.
For four years he had believed he had lost everything.
Now, holding his daughter for the very first time...
...he realized the war for his family had only just begun.
May you like
Because somewhere in Chicago...
Corsaro was already preparing his next move.
