CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET SHE COULD NO LONGER HIDE

CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET SHE COULD NO LONGER HIDE
A week passed.
For the first time in over a year, Ava followed something resembling a normal routine.
Breakfast with Sophie.
Short walks when she had the strength.
Watching old skating performances together.
Teaching balance by having Sophie stand on one foot while brushing her teeth.
"You have to make your body your friend," Ava explained.
"Not your enemy."
Sophie nodded seriously.
Even Ethan found himself practicing after she went to bed.
Ava laughed so hard she nearly cried.
"You look ridiculous."
"I run companies."
"You cannot stand on one foot for ten seconds."
"Those skills are apparently unrelated."
Little by little, the house changed.
Laughter replaced silence.
Music returned to rooms that had known only quiet.
Even Claire's old piano was opened for the first time in years.
One evening Ethan stopped outside the living room.
Inside, Ava was playing a slow melody while Sophie danced in wool socks across the hardwood floor.
For just a second...
It felt like the house was breathing again.
But happiness has a way of making bad news even harder.
Two weeks later, Ethan returned early from the office.
He heard voices from the guesthouse.
Margaret's voice was shaking.
"You can't keep hiding it."
"I know."
"You have to tell him."
"I can't."
"You collapsed again this morning."
Silence.
Then Ava spoke.
"I got the new scans."
Ethan froze outside the half-open door.
"The tumors reached my lungs."
Margaret began crying.
"The doctors said..."
Ava couldn't finish.
Margaret whispered the words instead.
"They think you have three months."
The world seemed to stop.
Three months.
Ethan's hand tightened against the doorframe.
Inside, Ava spoke so quietly he almost couldn't hear.
"I'm not afraid of dying anymore."
Margaret looked at her through tears.
"Then what are you afraid of?"
Ava's answer broke her.
"I'm afraid of leaving that little girl behind."
Outside the door, Ethan closed his eyes.
Not because he was trying not to cry.
Because he suddenly understood what Sophie had already figured out.
Some people entered your life for years.
Others entered for only weeks.
Yet somehow left fingerprints on your heart that could never be erased.
He stepped away from the doorway before either woman realized he had been there.
That night, after Sophie had gone to sleep, Ethan sat alone in his study.
He opened his laptop—not to review business reports, but to search every clinical trial, every experimental treatment, every specialist in the country.
He called hospitals in three different states.
He contacted researchers whose names he had never heard before.
Money had solved countless problems throughout his career.
For the first time in his life...
He was willing to spend every dollar he owned.
Not to buy success.
Not to build another company.
But for one impossible hope:
To give Ava another chance at tomorrow.
And upstairs, unaware of the quiet battle Ethan had already begun fighting for her, Ava opened the drawer beside her bed.
Inside lay the unfinished goodbye letter.
She stared at it for a long time.
Then, for the first time since writing those heartbreaking words—
"To whoever finds this... goodbye."
—she picked up a pen...
May you like
...crossed out the final sentence...
...and left the page unfinished. Because somewhere deep inside her heart, a tiny part of her had begun to wonder if perhaps... goodbye did not have to be written just yet.
