Epilogue

Epilogue

Years later, when Eli left for college, he packed lightly.

Clothes.

Books.

His sketchpads.

And one framed crayon drawing.

Three stick figures.

A blue house.

A yellow sun.

The edges had faded with time.

The paper had yellowed.

But Hannah had never thrown it away.

Before loading the last box into the car, Eli looked at the drawing and smiled.

"You know..."

"What?"

"I used to think this picture showed the family I lost."

He looked at his mother.

"Now I think it shows the family we kept."

Hannah slipped her arm through his.

"We weren't perfect."

"No."

He smiled.

Years earlier, a birthday candle had gone out in that same city, exposing betrayal, greed, and secrets hidden beneath polished smiles.

But light has a way of returning.

Sometimes not through grand miracles.

Sometimes through a mother who refuses to give up.

A child who chooses hope over bitterness.
