CHAPTER 5: The Recording That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 5: The Recording That Changed Everything

The bedroom door clicked shut behind Brooke.

Her perfume lingered in the air long after she disappeared down the hallway.

Only then did Ethan slowly open his eyes.

Hannah gasped, nearly dropping Jack.

"Mr. Hale..."

Ethan raised one finger to his lips.

"Quiet."

His voice was hoarse from hours of pretending, but his mind had never been clearer.

Tears filled Hannah's eyes.

"You're awake..."

"I've been awake the whole time."

The color drained from her face.

"You... heard everything?"

"Every word."

He slowly pushed himself upright, pulling away the gauze wrapped around his head.

The fake bruises were beginning to smear.

"I hoped I would discover whether Brooke truly loved my sons."

He looked toward the closed door.

"I never imagined I'd hear someone discussing my brakes."

Hannah sat carefully in the chair beside the bed, still holding the twins.

"I thought I imagined it."

"You didn't."

Ethan pressed the hidden button beneath his nightstand.

Less than ten seconds later, Caleb entered through the private connecting door, followed by Victor Sloan and Dr. Reeves.

Hannah stared in disbelief.

"They knew?"

Caleb nodded.

"Only the four of us."

Victor looked at Ethan.

"I wish I could say you were wrong."

"So do I."

Ethan stood slowly, stretching stiff muscles.

"No more pretending."

Caleb immediately handed him a tablet.

"We found something."

On the screen appeared security footage from the underground garage.

Timestamp:

Two nights before the accident.

A black SUV rolled into Ethan's private parking area.

Brooke stepped out.

She wasn't alone.

A tall man wearing a baseball cap followed her.

His face remained hidden from the main camera.

The two disappeared beside Ethan's vehicle.

Seven minutes later they returned.

The man carried a small black toolbox.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Zoom."

Caleb enlarged the image.

The man's face was still hidden...

...but one detail stood out.

A silver ring engraved with the letter R.

Victor frowned.

"I've seen that before."

"Where?"

"Ridgeview Executive Club."

"The members wear custom rings."

"Only about forty people have them."

Ethan looked up.

"Get me the membership list."

Meanwhile...

Brooke drove across town in her white Mercedes.

She checked the rearview mirror every few seconds.

No one appeared to be following her.

Satisfied, she turned into an abandoned industrial district.

An old warehouse stood at the end of the road.

Its windows were boarded.

Its parking lot empty.

Inside, a man waited beside a folding table.

He removed his cap as Brooke entered.

His name was Ryan Mercer.

Former mechanic.

Former street racer.

Current fixer for people who preferred not to leave fingerprints.

"You shouldn't have called."

Ryan shrugged.

"You weren't answering."

"I was at the estate."

"So?"

"So Hannah heard part of our conversation."

Ryan stopped smiling.

"How much?"

"I don't know."

His expression hardened.

"That's a problem."

Brooke folded her arms.

"No."

"Ethan's practically dead."

Ryan looked directly into her eyes.

"You'd better hope he is."

Back at the Hale estate...

Caleb continued reviewing network records.

Another alert appeared.

"I've got her."

Ethan turned.

"What?"

"Brooke's phone."

He pointed at a blinking map.

"She just connected to a private cell tower."

"Location?"

"Old Franklin Steel Warehouse."

Victor frowned.

"Nobody uses that building."

Dr. Reeves quietly added,

"Except people who don't want to be seen."

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

"We're going."

Victor blocked his path.

"Without police?"

"Not yet."

"We don't have enough."

"We have suspicion."

"We need proof."

Ethan looked toward the sleeping twins.

May you like

"My sons almost lost their father."

"I'm not waiting."
