Chapter 8: The Man in the Photograph

Chapter 8: The Man in the Photograph
Three weeks later, Ethan received a phone call that changed everything.
Laura Miller was dead.
Officials claimed she suffered a sudden medical emergency in prison.
The news spread quickly.
Most people barely reacted.
To the world, she was simply the woman who abandoned her children.
Another tragic chapter ending.
But Ethan felt uneasy.
Very uneasy.
Because Laura had been healthy during their meeting.
And now she was gone.
Forever.
Taking countless secrets with her.
Or so everyone thought.
Two days after her death, Ethan received another package.
This one was addressed directly to him.
The handwriting belonged to Laura.
Inside was a letter.
And an old photograph.
The letter began:
"If you're reading this, I didn't get the chance to tell you everything."
Ethan's heart pounded.
He continued reading.
Laura explained that years before meeting Richard Collins, she had become involved with people connected to a financial fraud scheme worth millions of dollars.
Richard was one of several businessmen involved.
But he wasn't the leader.
Not even close.
The real mastermind remained hidden.
Powerful enough to avoid prosecution.
Powerful enough to destroy evidence.
Powerful enough to make witnesses disappear.
Then Ethan looked at the photograph.
A group of people stood together at a charity gala.
Richard Collins was there.
Laura was there.
And standing between them was a smiling man in a black suit.
His face seemed strangely familiar.
Ethan's blood froze.
He knew exactly where he had seen him before.
The man appeared regularly on television.
A billionaire investor.
A celebrated philanthropist.
A public hero admired across the country.
The letter continued:
"Richard threatened to expose him. That's why everyone became dangerous."
Ethan's hands trembled.
The final paragraph was written unevenly, as if Laura had been rushing.
"The night Richard died, I wasn't the only one at the house."
"The man in the photograph arrived shortly before midnight."
"He left minutes before the fire started."
"If anything happens to me, don't trust anyone connected to him."
The letter ended there.
No signature.
No explanation.
Nothing more.
For hours Ethan sat in silence.
Trying to process what he had read.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
A distorted voice spoke.
Only seven words.
"Stop digging if you want to live."
The call ended immediately.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His pulse racing.
Someone knew about the photograph.
Someone knew about the letter.
And someone was afraid of the truth.
For the first time since Apartment 3B, Ethan felt genuine fear.
Not for himself.
But for Lily and Ben.
Because if Laura's final warning was true...
The people behind Richard Collins' death were still out there.
Still watching.

And now they knew Ethan was getting closer.
To be continued in Chapter 9...
