CHAPTER 6 – THE SAFE BENEATH THE CHAPEL

CHAPTER 6 – THE SAFE BENEATH THE CHAPEL

The funeral for Evelyn Porter was held three days later.

Rain fell steadily across the cemetery.

Black umbrellas stretched in every direction.

My mother stood near the front wearing designer sunglasses despite the storm.

When she saw Hannah beside me...

her smile disappeared.

She hadn't expected us to arrive together.

She certainly hadn't expected us to stand together.

After the service she approached calmly.

"Caleb."

"Mother."

Her eyes shifted briefly toward Hannah.

"I see you've made... interesting choices."

"I've made truthful ones."

For the first time in years, she looked genuinely uncomfortable.

"I don't know what Hannah has been telling you—"

"I heard Dad's recording."

Everything about her changed.

Just for a second.

A flicker of fear.

Then it vanished.

"I think grief has confused you."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"I think you've been lying for six years."

Several mourners turned to watch.

My mother lowered her voice.

"This isn't the place."

"You said that five years ago."

She stared at me.

"You should have listened."

Then she walked away.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Just...

certain.

Certain she was still in control.

As people began leaving, an elderly priest approached quietly.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

"Yes?"

He handed me a small envelope.

"Evelyn asked me to give you this if anything happened to her."

My hands trembled.

Inside was a brass key.

Attached to it was a handwritten note.

St. Andrew's Chapel. Basement. Locker 17.

Hannah looked at me.

"That's the safe."

The old chapel sat on the edge of Franklin, nearly abandoned.

Dust covered the wooden pews.

The basement smelled of stone and age.

Rows of small steel lockers lined one wall.

Number 17.

The brass key slid in perfectly.

I opened the door.

Inside sat a weathered metal box.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only documents.

Hundreds of them.

Birth certificates.

Bank statements.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope addressed in my father's handwriting.

For Caleb—Only When You Learn the Truth.

My throat tightened.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Son, if you're reading this, I failed to stop what was coming. I trusted the wrong people for too long. The fraud reaches farther than you can imagine. But the greatest crime wasn't financial. If Margaret discovered Hannah was carrying your child, she would never allow that child to inherit what belongs to you. Protect Hannah. Protect your son. And whatever happens... never let Margaret reach the trust documents.

I stopped breathing.

"My son..."

Hannah covered her mouth.

My father had known.

He had known about Mason before he died.

Then another photograph slipped from the envelope.

It showed my father standing beside a younger Evelyn...

holding a thick blue binder.

Across the front, in bold black letters, were the words:

WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST – ORIGINAL COPY

At the bottom of the photograph, my father had written only one sentence.

The original is hidden where she will never think to look.

Before either of us could speak—

Footsteps echoed through the chapel above.

Slow.

Heavy.

May you like

More than one person.

Someone else knew we had found the safe.
