CHAPTER 5: THE WITNESS THEY HAD TO SILENCE

CHAPTER 5: THE WITNESS THEY HAD TO SILENCE
Claire didn't realize she was being watched until she reached the nurses' locker room.
The hallway was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
Only the humming fluorescent lights and the distant beeping of cardiac monitors broke the silence.
She unlocked her locker, pulled out her phone, and finally looked at the twelve missed calls from her landlord.
She closed her eyes.
Her rent was overdue.
Her father was gone.
Her savings account contained less than eighty dollars.
And somehow, in the span of one night, she had become the most important witness in a conspiracy involving one of Chicago's most powerful crime families.
She shoved the phone back into her pocket.
The overhead lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then they went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Claire froze.
A soft click echoed behind her.
The unmistakable sound of the locker room door locking.
Her pulse exploded.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Only footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Getting closer.
Claire backed away until her shoulders touched the lockers.
The emergency lights blinked on, bathing the room in a dim red glow.
A tall man wearing blue hospital scrubs stood in the doorway.
His surgical mask hid most of his face.
Only his cold gray eyes were visible.
"You shouldn't have spoken," he said calmly.
Claire's stomach dropped.
"You poisoned the baby."
The man tilted his head.
"You noticed something no one else did."
He reached into his scrub pocket.
Not for a syringe.
For a suppressed pistol.
Claire didn't think.
She ran.
The first shot shattered a locker door inches from her head.
Metal screamed.
She threw herself behind a laundry cart as another bullet ripped through the room.
The masked man walked forward without hurry.
"You've made this much harder than it needed to be."
Claire grabbed the heavy cart with both hands and shoved it with every ounce of strength she had.
The cart slammed into him.
He stumbled just enough.
Claire burst through the emergency exit and sprinted into the service corridor.
Behind her—
Bang!
Another suppressed shot struck the concrete wall.
She ran harder.
Bare feet slapped the cold floor as she kicked off her shoes to move faster.
She rounded a corner—
—and crashed directly into someone.
Strong hands caught her before she fell.
Dominic Moretti.
Two of his bodyguards instantly drew their weapons.
Claire gasped for air.
"Someone... someone's trying to kill me!"
Before Dominic could answer—
Gunfire erupted from the hallway behind her.
The masked shooter fired twice before disappearing through a stairwell door.
Dominic's guards returned fire.
The hallway exploded with deafening echoes.
"After him!" Dominic roared.
Four guards disappeared into the stairwell.
The remaining men surrounded Claire.
Dominic looked at the bullet hole in the wall.
Then at the terrified nurse.
"You were right."
Claire could barely breathe.
"He knew who I was."
Dominic's expression turned to stone.
"No."
"He knew exactly where you'd be."
His gaze slowly lifted toward the hospital security cameras.
"Someone told him."
Twenty minutes later...
Every employee inside St. Anne's Medical Center was ordered into the hospital auditorium.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Janitors.
Administrators.
Residents.
No one was allowed to leave.
Detective Marcus Hale stood beside Dominic at the front of the room.
"This hospital," Marcus announced, "is now an active homicide investigation."
Whispers filled the auditorium.
"We believe at least one employee assisted in contaminating neonatal medical equipment."
The whispers became frightened murmurs.
"And moments ago, an attempt was made on Nurse Claire Bennett's life."
Every head turned toward Claire.
She wished the floor would swallow her.
Marcus continued.
"The shooter escaped."
"But he didn't act alone."
Dominic stepped forward.
The room became instantly silent.
"If the person responsible comes forward now..."
His voice was calm.
"...I'll let the police take them."
Nobody moved.
"If I find them first..."
His eyes swept across hundreds of terrified faces.
"...the police won't need to."
No one doubted him.
Later that morning...
Hospital security reviewed surveillance footage.
Frame by frame.
Hour by hour.
Finally...
A technician paused the video.
"There."
The screen showed the neonatal supply room at 5:31 p.m.
The maintenance technician entered carrying two sealed equipment boxes.
Thirty seconds later...
Another person entered.
Their face was hidden beneath a surgical cap and mask.
The timestamp froze.
Marcus leaned closer.
"Can you enhance it?"
The technician zoomed in.
Not the face.
The wrist.
There, barely visible beneath the sleeve...
A distinctive silver bracelet engraved with a tiny serpent wrapped around a cross.
Claire felt a jolt of recognition.
"I've seen that before."
Marcus looked at her.
"Where?"
She closed her eyes, replaying the night in her memory.
Then they flew open.
May you like
"The operating room."
"One of the surgeons was wearing it."
