CHAPTER 7 — THE HAND IN THE DARK

CHAPTER 7 — THE HAND IN THE DARK

The mansion disappeared into darkness.

A chorus of frightened voices rose from the ballroom below.

Someone screamed.

Crystal shattered.

The emergency generators failed to activate.

Alexander's voice cut through the chaos.

"Nobody move!"

Too late.

Lucy felt Matthew's hand ripped away from hers.

A shadow lunged from the doorway.

Instinct took over.

Without thinking, Lucy grabbed the stranger's sleeve with both hands.

The fabric felt rough.

Military grade.

The same black tactical material as the thread she had found beneath the music box.

The man jerked violently, throwing Lucy onto the hardwood floor.

Matthew was dragged toward the hallway.

Before anyone else reacted, Clara Harper burst into the library.

She heard only one word from her daughter.

"Matthew!"

Clara didn't hesitate.

She tackled the masked man with every ounce of strength she possessed.

Both crashed into a bookshelf.

Hundreds of books rained onto the floor.

Matthew broke free.

Alexander reached his son just as the emergency lights flickered on.

A dim red glow flooded the library.

The attacker was gone.

Only an open window remained, curtains whipping in the night wind.

Security surrounded the mansion within minutes.

No one entered.

No one left.

Police arrived shortly afterward.

Detectives photographed the damaged library, the broken shelves, and the tactical thread.

The masked intruder had escaped—but not without leaving behind one crucial mistake.

A black leather wallet had fallen beneath the overturned bookshelf.

Rebecca picked it up carefully.

Inside was no identification.

Only a magnetic security card.

The logo made Alexander's stomach sink.

ValeWorks Executive Access – Level Seven.

Only eight people in the entire company possessed that clearance.

Alexander.

Rebecca.

Evelyn.

And five members of the board of directors.

Detective Daniel Ortiz laid the card on the table.

"So either one of those executives was here tonight..."

"...or someone stole their credentials."

Rebecca looked toward the board members.

Three looked frightened.

One looked confused.

One looked furious.

His name was Victor Lang.

ValeWorks' Chief Financial Officer.

He crossed his arms.

"This is absurd."

Alexander looked directly at him.

"Is it?"

Victor answered immediately.

"You've already embarrassed this family enough."

Professor Carter quietly observed,

"Interesting."

Victor frowned.

"What?"

"You seem much more concerned about the company's reputation than Isabelle's death."

Meanwhile, Matthew sat quietly beside Lucy.

For the first time all evening, Alexander remained beside his son instead of returning to the executives.

Slowly...

Awkwardly...

He raised his hands.

His signing was clumsy.

But understandable.

Are...you...hurt?

Matthew looked surprised.

Then smiled faintly.

No.

Alexander nodded.

He searched for another sign.

Forgot it.

Matthew gently corrected his hand position.

Alexander laughed through tears.

His own son...

Teaching him the language he had abandoned.

It wasn't perfect.

It wasn't fluent.

But it was a beginning.

Lucy smiled.

Samuel had always said healing started with the first honest conversation.

This was theirs.

Hours later, forensic investigators made an unexpected discovery.

The security card contained microscopic traces of printer toner.

Not ordinary toner.

Industrial security-print toner used exclusively inside ValeWorks headquarters.

Rebecca frowned.

"Someone made this card recently."

Detective Ortiz nodded.

"It wasn't stolen."

"It was issued."

Alexander looked toward Victor Lang.

"So who authorized it?"

Before Victor could answer, Evelyn's laptop chimed.

"I recovered part of the deleted server logs."

Everyone gathered around.

One login had accessed the accident archives that evening.

Not from headquarters.

From inside...

The Vale mansion.

The exact location appeared on-screen.

Private Office – Board Lounge.

Alexander's face hardened.

"The board lounge has been locked all night."

Detective Ortiz replied,

"Then let's unlock it."

Inside the board lounge, everything appeared untouched.

Until Lucy noticed something.

The grandfather clock.

Its pendulum wasn't moving.

She remembered another hidden compartment behind another antique object.

"Mr. Vale..."

She pointed.

"The clock."

Alexander opened its wooden case.

Inside...

Not gears.

Not weights.

A concealed steel safe.

Victor Lang took one involuntary step backward.

Rebecca saw it.

"So that's where you hid it."

"Hid what?" Alexander demanded.

Rebecca looked at Victor.

"The missing evidence."

Victor turned and ran.

He never reached the door.

Detective Ortiz tackled him before he crossed the room.

The safe was opened minutes later.

Inside were flash drives...

Financial records...

The missing portion of Isabelle's recording...

And one signed confession.

May you like

Not from Alexander.

From Victor Lang.
