CHAPTER 7 – THE CONTRACT THEY TRIED TO STEAL

CHAPTER 7 – THE CONTRACT THEY TRIED TO STEAL
The next morning, sunlight poured through the kitchen windows of Hale House.
Lily had barely slept.
The contract lay neatly on the table beside a cup of untouched coffee.
Fifty thousand boxes.
A real business.
A future she had never dared imagine.
Eleanor smiled as she placed a warm cinnamon roll in front of her.
"You don't have to decide today."
Lily nodded.
"I know."
"But I'm afraid if I wake up tomorrow, it'll all be gone."
Victor looked up from his notebook.
"Dreams disappear when people stop believing in them."
He slid a pen across the table.
"This one won't."
Before Lily could reach for it—
The front door burst open.
Frank Whitaker stormed inside, Diane and Ashley close behind.
"Lily!"
Eleanor immediately stepped between them.
"You can't just walk into someone's home."
Frank ignored her.
"There you are."
He pointed at the contract.
"I knew it."
Lily stood slowly.
"How did you find me?"
Ashley held up her phone.
"The internet."
A local news story had reported that Victor Hale was helping the young candy maker from Michigan Avenue.
Frank smiled smugly.
"You really thought you could disappear?"
Victor remained seated.
His calmness made Frank even angrier.
"You must be Mr. Hale."
Victor nodded once.
"And you are?"
"I'm Lily's guardian."
"No," Lily said quietly.
"You were."
Frank pretended not to hear.
He turned to Victor.
"We've sacrificed everything for this girl."
Victor said nothing.
"We raised her."
Silence.
"We gave her food, shelter, education."
Victor finally spoke.
"Did you?"
Frank frowned.
"Of course we did."
Victor opened a folder beside him.
"I had my legal team conduct a background review."
Frank's confidence faltered.
Victor continued.
"Lily has paid you rent every month since she turned eighteen."
He looked at Diane.
"She also paid household expenses."
Another page turned.
"Utility bills."
Another.
"Property taxes."
Another.
"Even Ashley's community college tuition."
Ashley's face drained of color.
Victor closed the folder.
"Interesting definition of charity."
Frank slammed his fist on the table.
"That's none of your business."
"The moment you attempted to interfere with my company..."
Victor stood.
"...it became exactly my business."
The room fell silent.
Frank pointed toward Lily.
"Everything she has belongs to this family."
"No."
Victor's voice remained calm.
"It belongs to the woman who earned it."
Frank laughed bitterly.
"She's too naive to run a company."
Victor smiled slightly.
"I've met CEOs with less discipline."
Then Lily surprised everyone.
She stepped forward.
"Frank."
He turned.
"I owe you honesty."
He folded his arms.
"I'm listening."
"You gave me a roof."
"That's right."
"And for years, I believed I owed you my life."
She shook her head gently.
"I was wrong."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"A child never owes someone for doing what adults are supposed to do."
No one spoke.
Lily took a deep breath.
"I'm grateful for what I survived."
She looked directly at Diane.
"But I won't spend the rest of my life paying for it."
Frank's face twisted with anger.
"You'll regret this."
"No."
She smiled through her tears.
"I already regret waiting this long."
Victor nodded toward the front door.
"I believe this conversation is over."
Frank glared at him.
"You think money makes you powerful?"
Victor answered quietly.
"No."
He looked toward Lily.
"Character does."
Security officers entered moments later.
Frank, Diane, and Ashley were escorted outside.
Frank shouted one last time from the porch.
"You'll fail!"
Lily watched him leave.
Then she closed the door herself.

This time...
She felt no fear at all.
