CHAPTER 6 — EMILY'S LAST GAMBLE

CHAPTER 6 — EMILY'S LAST GAMBLE

A week later, Emily requested a meeting through our attorneys.

Against everyone's advice, I agreed.

Not because I wanted reconciliation.

Because I wanted answers.

We met in a conference room at my lawyer's office.

Emily looked exhausted.

Gone were the designer clothes and perfect makeup.

She seemed older.

Smaller.

But the moment she sat down, I recognized the same calculating expression.

She slid a folder across the table.

"If we settle quietly, nobody has to know."

I didn't touch it.

She continued.

"I'll agree to the divorce."

Silence.

"I won't ask for the house."

More silence.

"I won't seek spousal support."

Finally she looked up.

"I just need one thing."

"What?"

"Delete the videos."

My attorney almost laughed.

"No."

Emily ignored him.

She looked only at me.

"Daniel... please."

I answered with a question.

"Why?"

"They'll ruin my life."

I stared at her.

"My mother's life was already ruined."

Tears appeared instantly.

"I made mistakes."

"You abused a disabled woman."

"I was overwhelmed."

"You terrorized an eight-year-old."

"I never touched Noah."

"You didn't have to."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it again.

Then tried another approach.

"If those videos become public, I'll never work again."

I leaned forward.

"Did you think about that while threatening my mother?"

She looked away.

"I wasn't myself."

"No."

I nodded slowly.

"The videos proved exactly who you were."

For nearly an hour, she cycled through every possible strategy.

Denial.

Excuses.

Blame.

Self-pity.

Promises to change.

Not once—not once—did she ask how my mother was recovering.

Not once did she ask how Noah was sleeping after months of living in fear.

Everything revolved around her.

Finally, my attorney placed another document on the table.

A financial audit.

Emily frowned.

"What is this?"

"I've spent the last week reviewing our accounts," I said.

Color drained from her face.

There were dozens of unexplained withdrawals.

Small amounts.

Two hundred dollars.

Five hundred.

Eight hundred.

Always labeled as "medical expenses."

Except there had been no such bills.

Over two years, the total exceeded $68,000.

My voice remained calm.

"Where did the money go?"

Emily stared at the papers.

"I..."

"Answer me."

"It wasn't that much."

"It was exactly that much."

She looked trapped.

Finally she whispered,

"I deserved something."

"For what?"

"For giving up my career."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"So you stole from us?"

"I earned it."

"No."

I pushed the statements back toward her.

"You took money meant for my mother's care."

The room fell silent.

My attorney spoke next.

"Given the documented abuse and the financial evidence, we will be asking the court to award Mr. Carter sole ownership of the marital assets and refer the financial records for further review."

Emily's shoulders slumped.

For the first time since this nightmare began...

She realized there would be no dramatic speech.

No miracle.

No one left to manipulate.

As she stood to leave, she turned toward me one final time.

"You'll regret destroying me."

I met her gaze without anger.

"I didn't destroy you."

I paused.

"You destroyed yourself the day you decided my mother couldn't fight back."

Emily said nothing.

May you like

She simply walked out of the conference room, the door closing softly behind her.

It was the last time I ever saw her outside a courtroom.
