CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET INSIDE VAULT 17

CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET INSIDE VAULT 17
Three days later, Alessandro placed the silver key into my palm once again.
"It is time."
I looked at the engraving.
Vault 17.
Banco Real de España.
My mother's greatest secret.
Madrid's oldest private bank occupied an elegant granite building that resembled a palace more than a financial institution.
When we arrived, the bank's president personally greeted us.
"Mrs. Ricci."
He bowed respectfully.
"Your mother instructed us to expect you."
"You've been waiting?"
"For twenty-five years."
The words sent a shiver through me.
He led us deep beneath the building.
Past reinforced steel doors.
Fingerprint scanners.
Retina scans.
Finally...
Vault 17.
The silver key slid smoothly into the ancient lock.
My hands trembled.
"What if I don't want to know?"
Alessandro answered gently.
"Your mother believed you deserved the truth."
The heavy door swung open.
Inside stood a single wooden chest.
Nothing more.
No gold.
No stacks of cash.
No diamonds.
Only one weathered cedar box.
I slowly lifted the lid.
On top lay another letter.
Below it...
A tiny knitted blue baby sweater.
Tears instantly filled my eyes.
"I made this," my mother had written.
"The night before your father died."
Beneath the sweater rested dozens of home videos, family photographs, and handwritten journals.
There was also an old cassette recorder.
The bank president quietly stepped outside, leaving us alone.
I pressed the play button.
Static crackled.
Then...
My mother's voice.
"If you're hearing this, my beautiful Elena..."
I burst into tears.
"I hope you're older than I was when I lost everything."
Her voice remained calm.
"Money can rebuild houses."
A pause.
"It cannot rebuild trust."
Another pause.
"If Marco is still beside you..."
She laughed softly.
"...then this recording will make me the happiest paranoid mother in Spain."
I smiled through my tears.
"But if he has already left..."
Her tone became gentler.
"...then listen carefully."
The room seemed to disappear.
"There is one inheritance I never listed in any will."
I looked toward Alessandro.
He frowned.
"I don't know what she means."
My mother's voice continued.
"Your father kept evidence."
Evidence?
"He knew who ordered the murders of our family."
My heartbeat quickened.
"He hid everything where only you could find it."
I searched frantically through the chest.
Underneath the journals...
A false wooden panel.
I carefully lifted it.
Inside rested a black leather folder stamped with a faded seal.
CONFIDENTIAL
There were photographs.
Bank transfers.
Witness statements.
Names.
Powerful names.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Even members of law enforcement.
Alessandro's face drained of color.
"My God..."
"What is it?"
He whispered,
"Your father identified everyone involved."
I looked down at the final page.
One signature stood out above all the others.
A man who was still alive.
A billionaire.
One of the most influential businessmen in Europe.
The man the newspapers called a national hero.
Alessandro slowly closed the folder.
His voice was barely audible.
"This..."
He swallowed hard.
"...is why your mother hid for twenty-five years."
At that exact moment, his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at me with unmistakable alarm.
"Mrs. Ricci..."
"What happened?"
"Our security team has detained someone trying to enter the estate."
"Who?"
Alessandro's expression turned cold.
"Not Marco."
He paused.
"The man claims he worked for the people who murdered your father."
"And he says..."
May you like
The room fell completely silent.
"...they've finally realized Isabella Ricci had a daughter."
