CHAPTER 4: THE SECURITY CAMERA SAW WHAT NO ONE EXPECTED
The drive home was silent.
Not uncomfortable.
Not angry.
Simply exhausted.
Maya stared out the passenger window.
Streetlights blurred into golden streaks.
Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.
He hadn't spoken for nearly twenty minutes.
Finally...
"I'm sorry."
Maya smiled weakly.
"You already said that."
"I know."
"But I don't think I'll ever stop saying it."
She looked at him.
He seemed older.
Not because of gray hair.
Because guilt ages people faster than time.
"I should have protected you."
"You were just a kid."
"When?"
"When they taught me to stay quiet?"
"When they convinced me I owed everyone else my happiness?"
"When they took your savings?"
He gripped the wheel tighter.
"I failed."
Maya reached across the console and gently rested her hand over his.
"No."
"You finally didn't."
The next morning, Elena received a phone call.
It was the bank.
"We've reviewed the account."
"There appears to be an irregular transfer."
"Because the account was established specifically to hold funds on behalf of Maya Carter, we require authorization from both parties."
Elena straightened.
"So the money hasn't disappeared?"
"Not yet."
A wave of relief swept through her.
But it lasted only seconds.
The bank employee continued.
"However..."
"Mrs. Patricia Anderson came into the branch yesterday afternoon."
"She requested immediate withdrawal."
Elena's heart sank.
"Did she get it?"
"No."
"There was a problem."
"What problem?"
The employee hesitated.
"Our internal security team flagged the transaction."
"Why?"
"Because of something seen on the branch surveillance cameras."
Two hours later...
Daniel and Elena sat inside a small office at the bank.
Across from them sat the branch manager.
He rotated a computer monitor.
"This happened yesterday."
The footage began playing.
Patricia entered confidently.
Designer handbag.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect posture.
She approached the counter.
She smiled.
Then she handed over paperwork requesting withdrawal of Maya's Paris fund.
The teller politely asked several questions.
Everything looked normal.
Until Patricia leaned closer.
She looked around.
Then quietly slid an envelope across the counter.
The teller didn't touch it.
Instead...
He pressed a silent security button beneath the desk.
Patricia kept talking.
Even without sound...
Her meaning was obvious.
Money.
Favor.
Silence.
A bribe.
Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.
"My mother..."
The manager nodded grimly.
"Our employee immediately refused the envelope."
"He then reported the incident."
"The transfer was frozen."
Elena covered her mouth.
Patricia hadn't simply planned to steal the money.
She had tried to bribe a bank employee to make it happen.
The manager clicked to the next video.
"This is the part you'll want to see."
The footage switched to the lobby camera.
Patricia stormed out of the office.
Seconds later...
Richard entered through the front doors.
He had clearly been waiting outside.
Patricia pointed furiously toward the teller.
Richard marched inside.
The security cameras showed him shouting.
Pointing.
Threatening.
Customers turned to stare.
Children began crying.
Then...
The manager appeared.
Security arrived.
And Richard was escorted out of the building.
The final frame froze on Patricia's face.
For the first time anyone in the family had ever seen...
She looked afraid.
Very, very afraid.
Because she had just realized something.
This wasn't family drama anymore.
May you like
Now...
There was evidence.
