CHAPTER 6: The Secret Buried on Millie's Birth Certificate

CHAPTER 6: The Secret Buried on Millie's Birth Certificate
"I think you've come to the wrong house."
Attorney Michael Avery didn't flinch.
"I'm afraid not."
He extended the papers again.
"Mrs. Rachel Bennett is requesting emergency guardianship."
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was absurd.
"On what grounds?"
He looked almost uncomfortable.
"The court filing alleges emotional instability following your wife's death."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"It also claims your daughter has been subjected to neglect."
I felt my hands shaking.
"You've got nerve bringing this here after Rachel assaulted my child."
"I don't represent her actions."
"I represent her legal interests."
I slammed the papers shut.
"We're done."
He stopped me before I could close the door.
"There's one more document."
He removed a certified copy of Millie's birth certificate.
"Have you looked at this recently?"
I frowned.
"I was there when she was born."
"Please."
Against my better judgment, I took it.
Everything looked normal.
Name.
Date.
Hospital.
Then I noticed a small handwritten amendment in the margin.
One I'd somehow never paid attention to.
Original filing corrected by court order.
Correction?
I read further.
The original maternal information had been sealed.
Sealed?
Why would Hannah's information ever be sealed?
I looked up.
"What is this?"
Michael spoke carefully.
"Someone petitioned the court to seal part of your daughter's birth records three days after she was born."
"Who?"
"I can't legally answer."
"But you have the right to request the complete file."
My pulse hammered.
"Why are you showing me this?"
He hesitated.
Then, very quietly, he said,
"Because not everyone working for Rachel agrees with her."
Before I could respond, he walked away.
Leaving me with the documents.
And a question that refused to leave my mind.
Who had hidden something inside my daughter's birth records?
That afternoon I drove straight to the county records office.
After nearly an hour of waiting, an older clerk returned carrying a thin sealed envelope.
"This file requires judicial authorization."
"I have it."
She checked my identification before sliding it across the counter.
"I've worked here thirty years," she said softly.
"I've only seen one file sealed this quickly."
I broke the seal.
Inside was the original birth registration.
I scanned the page once.
Twice.
Then a third time.
Everything around me disappeared.
Because under the section marked Emergency Contact if Parents Cannot Be Reached, there was one handwritten name.
Not my parents.
Not Hannah's family.
Not Rachel.
It simply read:
Grace Holloway
The same Grace who had called me.
Five years before either of us supposedly knew each other.
I stared in disbelief.
How could Hannah have listed a woman I'd never even heard of?
Unless...
She had known Grace was alive all along.
As I reached for my phone to call the number again, another folded note slipped from the envelope.
It wasn't an official record.
It had been hidden inside the file.
Only six handwritten words.
"Millie isn't who Rachel thinks she is."
At the bottom was Hannah's unmistakable signature.
And beneath it...

A tiny butterfly, drawn in blue ink.
The same butterfly that had started unraveling every lie.
