CHAPTER 7 — The Final Hearing

CHAPTER 7 — The Final Hearing
The call came on a rainy Wednesday morning.
"Our adoption hearing has been moved up," our attorney, Karen Mitchell, said. "The judge had an opening."
I looked at Daniel.
He smiled.
"Then let's make Lily officially ours."
Karen hesitated.
"There is... one complication."
The smile faded from Daniel's face.
"What happened?"
"Your father filed an affidavit."
The room fell silent.
"What kind of affidavit?"
Karen took a careful breath.
"He claims the adoption is motivated by financial manipulation. He argues you're adopting Lily only to strengthen your public image after the dispute with your parents."
I stared in disbelief.
"That's absurd."
"I know," Karen replied. "But the judge is required to review every filing."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"My own father..."
"He can't stop the adoption simply by making accusations," Karen reassured us. "But we need to be prepared."
The courthouse was quiet the morning of the hearing.
Lily wore the same blue dress she had worn to Daniel's birthday dinner.
She insisted on it.
"It's my lucky dress."
Mason adjusted her crooked bow.
Chloe knelt to straighten her shoes.
"You look perfect," Chloe whispered.
Daniel watched all three children with tears already forming in his eyes.
No matter what happened inside that courtroom, they already looked like a family.
The hearing lasted less than an hour.
Judge Eleanor Brooks listened patiently as Karen presented years of evidence.
Photographs.
School records.
Medical authorizations.
Letters from teachers.
Report cards signed by Daniel.
Soccer registrations.
Dance recital programs.
Everything showed the same truth.
Daniel had been Lily's father in every way except legally.
Then Harold's affidavit was introduced.
The judge read it quietly.
She looked over her glasses at Daniel.
"Mr. Whitman, I'd like to ask you one question."
"Of course, Your Honor."
"If your parents restored your inheritance today—but only if you abandoned this adoption—what would you do?"
Daniel didn't pause.
"I'd walk away from every dollar."
The judge nodded.
"I thought so."
She turned toward Lily.
"May I ask you something?"
Lily looked at me nervously.
I squeezed her hand.
"It's okay."
The judge smiled warmly.
"Who is Daniel to you?"
Lily answered without hesitation.
"He's my dad."
The judge smiled again.
"When did he become your dad?"
Lily frowned as though the question were silly.
"He always was."
A few quiet laughs filled the courtroom.
Then Lily added softly,
"He just forgot to sign the paper."
Even the court reporter smiled.
Judge Brooks removed her glasses.
"In twenty-three years on this bench, I've learned something."
She looked directly at Harold, who had attended despite insisting he wasn't emotionally involved.
"Biology creates relatives."
She paused.
"Love creates parents."
Then she signed the final order.
"I hereby grant the petition."
The sound of her pen touching the paper seemed louder than anything else.
Daniel covered his face.
I burst into tears.
Mason hugged Chloe.
Lily looked confused.
"Does this mean...?"
Daniel dropped to one knee.
"It means you're officially Lily Grace Whitman."
She launched herself into his arms.
"I have your last name!"
"You've always had my heart," he whispered. "Now the paperwork finally caught up."
Across the courtroom, Harold quietly stood.
For just a moment, I thought he might congratulate us.
Instead, he walked out without a word.
May you like
Patricia followed.
Neither looked back.
