Chapter 7: The Truth Comes Into the Light

Chapter 7: The Truth Comes Into the Light

The room seemed to shrink around me.

"My father brought the police?" I asked.

The bank manager nodded carefully.

"He says there has been a theft involving family documents. He has requested that we prevent anyone from removing property that belongs to the Brooks family."

I almost laughed.

Richard wasn't trying to recover stolen property.

He was trying to stop me from exposing him.

The manager looked uncertain.

"Miss Brooks, these items are legally registered to you under your grandfather's instructions. No one may access them without your permission."

I took a slow breath.

"Then I'd like to leave through the main lobby."

He blinked.

"The main lobby?"

"Yes."

"If your father is waiting—"

"I know."

I slipped the USB drives, the original trust documents, and my grandfather's letter into my bag. Then I placed the Brooks signet ring on my finger.

For the first time in my life, it felt like it belonged there.

Richard was standing near the entrance when I walked into the lobby.

Beside him were two corporate attorneys, Madison, and two police officers.

My mother arrived only seconds later, looking confused.

"Natalie?" she asked. "What's going on?"

Richard pointed toward my bag.

"She has stolen confidential company property."

One of the officers turned to me.

"Miss Brooks, your father claims you unlawfully removed documents belonging to Brooks Holdings."

Before I could answer, the bank manager stepped forward.

"I'm afraid that's incorrect."

Everyone turned toward him.

"These materials were placed in Safety Deposit Box 117 by the late Charles Brooks. According to the bank's records, the sole legal owner upon release is Miss Natalie Brooks."

One attorney frowned.

"Can you prove that?"

The manager calmly produced a certified copy of the access agreement.

Both officers examined it.

After a moment, one handed it back.

"Sir," he said to Richard, "this appears to be a civil matter, not a criminal one."

Richard's confident expression cracked for the first time.

"This is ridiculous," he snapped. "She doesn't even know what she's carrying."

I met his eyes.

"I know exactly what I'm carrying."

His face lost all color.

An hour later, the emergency meeting of the Brooks Holdings Board of Directors began.

Every board member had been called in.

Richard sat at the head of the table as he always had.

When I entered, wearing my graduation dress beneath a tailored blazer and my grandfather's signet ring, the room fell silent.

Several directors immediately recognized the ring.

One elderly board member whispered,

"Charles's ring..."

Richard stood.

"This meeting is unnecessary."

The company's chief legal counsel interrupted him.

"Actually, Richard, it is required."

He turned toward me.

"Miss Brooks, you requested this meeting under the authority granted in your grandfather's trust."

I nodded.

"I'd like everyone to watch something."

The lights dimmed.

My grandfather appeared on the screen.

For twenty minutes, no one spoke.

The room was filled only with his recorded voice.

Every transfer of money.

Every forged signature.

Every warning.

Every piece of evidence.

When the video ended, silence hung over the boardroom.

Then the chairman slowly removed his glasses.

He looked at Richard.

"Is any part of this false?"

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The chief financial officer quietly slid several newly audited financial reports across the table.

"We verified the records this morning."

He looked directly at the board.

"The evidence matches."

One by one, the directors lowered their eyes.

The trust they had placed in Richard for years disappeared in a matter of minutes.

The chairman called for a vote.

"All those in favor of immediately removing Richard Brooks as Chief Executive Officer and referring this matter for criminal investigation."

Every hand rose.

Except Richard's.

The vote was unanimous.

Two security officers entered the room.

"Mr. Brooks," one said respectfully, "we'll escort you out."

Richard looked at me.

"I did all of this for this family."

I shook my head.

"You did it for yourself."

May you like

Without another word, he walked out.

It was the last time I ever saw him inside Brooks Holdings.
