CHAPTER 5 — The Scandal That Shook the Blackwell Name

CHAPTER 5 — The Scandal That Shook the Blackwell Name

By sunrise, the wedding reception was the biggest story in the city.

Not because a marriage had ended before it truly began.

But because nearly every humiliating moment had been captured on guests' phones.

Someone uploaded the clip of Vivian presenting Emily with the housekeeping uniform.

Another posted Carter's toast.

"To a wife who knows how to serve."

Within hours, millions had watched it.

The comments were merciless.

"This isn't a joke. It's emotional abuse."

"Imagine humiliating your own bride in public."

"She dodged a lifetime of misery."

By noon, national news outlets had picked up the story.

Talk shows replayed the footage.

Relationship experts called it a textbook example of coercive control.

Former employees of Blackwell Industries began speaking out online.

One anonymous post read:

"If this is how they treat family in public, imagine how they treat employees behind closed doors."

Then another appeared.

And another.

Within twenty-four hours, dozens of former staff members described years of intimidation, bullying, and humiliation under Vivian's management.

Some shared emails.

Others uploaded recordings of meetings.

The public outrage exploded.

At Blackwell Industries, panic spread through the executive offices.

The company's public relations director rushed into the boardroom carrying three phones.

"They're calling from every network."

No one answered.

"The stock has already fallen eleven percent."

Still silence.

"The board members want an emergency meeting."

Richard Blackwell leaned back in his chair, looking exhausted.

Across from him sat Carter and Vivian.

For the first time, neither had anything clever to say.

The company attorney entered moments later.

"We have another problem."

Vivian snapped.

"What now?"

"The wedding planner has released security footage."

"What footage?"

"The footage showing that you instructed staff not to remove the housekeeping uniform from the stage because..." He checked his notes.

"...you wanted maximum embarrassment."

Vivian's face drained of color.

"She recorded that?"

"The venue records all event coordination meetings."

Richard slowly closed his eyes.

"I warned both of you."

No one replied.

"I warned you that arrogance always leaves evidence."

That afternoon, the board of directors assembled.

For nearly four hours they questioned Carter and Vivian.

Every answer made things worse.

Finally, the chairman spoke.

"The Blackwell name has represented integrity for sixty-two years."

He looked directly at Carter.

"Yesterday, you turned it into a punchline."

He slid two envelopes across the polished table.

One to Vivian.

One to Carter.

"What are these?"

"Your resignations."

Vivian stood.

"You can't remove me."

"We already have."

Richard quietly signed the final page.

"As majority shareholder..."

He pushed the documents forward.

"...I approve."

Vivian stared at her husband.

"You chose them over us?"

Richard's voice was calm.

"No."

"I chose what was left of my conscience."

That evening, Carter drove to my office.

For the first time in years, he arrived without confidence.

Without expensive cologne.

Without arrogance.

Daniel showed him into the reception area but did not offer coffee.

He waited nearly an hour before I finally stepped into the room.

He stood immediately.

"Mrs. Hayes..."

I remained standing.

"What do you want?"

"I made a mistake."

"No."

"You made a plan."

He lowered his head.

"I love Emily."

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I opened my desk drawer.

Inside lay the gray housekeeping uniform.

I had asked the wedding staff to return it.

I placed it on the table between us.

"Take it."

He frowned.

"What?"

"You bought it."

"I don't want it."

"Neither did my daughter."

His shoulders sagged.

"I'll do anything."

I shook my head.

"The one thing Emily needed..."

"...was something you never offered."

"And what's that?"

"Respect."

There was nothing left to say.

Daniel quietly opened the office door.

May you like

Carter walked out alone.

And for the first time in his life, no amount of money could buy another chance.
