CHAPTER 2 — THE QUESTION

The room became silent.
The 65-year-old woman blinked in confusion.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
The doctors exchanged nervous glances.
The young physician carefully placed the ultrasound probe aside.
"Ma'am, can you tell us the name of the doctor who has been monitoring your pregnancy?"
The woman smiled faintly.
"I haven't had a doctor."
Every face in the room froze.
Her daughter stepped forward.
"What are you talking about, Mom?"
The woman looked surprised.
"I took pregnancy tests. They were positive. My stomach kept growing. I thought..."
The doctor gently interrupted.
"You never had an ultrasound?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Blood tests?"
"No."
"Prenatal visits?"
Again, no.
The medical team looked increasingly concerned.
The senior specialist slowly sat beside her bed.
"Ma'am, we're going to run a few more examinations."
Fear suddenly filled the room.
For nine months, everyone had believed a miracle was happening.
But now the doctors seemed terrified.
An hour later, the scan results arrived.
The specialist stared at the screen.
Then his face turned pale.

Instead, something else had been growing inside her body.
Something that explained everything.
May you like
