CHAPTER 3 – The Phone Call That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 3 – The Phone Call That Changed Everything

I couldn't stop staring at the paused surveillance image.

Ryan.

My little brother.

The boy who used to crawl into my room during thunderstorms because he was terrified of lightning.

The man who had stood beside me at our father's funeral only ten months earlier, holding my hand while we watched the casket disappear behind the curtain.

Now he was on camera helping Patricia enter the airport.

Helping the woman who had just tried to rip my daughter from my arms.

"There has to be some mistake," I whispered.

The detective didn't argue.

"I hope there is."

He closed the laptop carefully.

"But we investigate facts, not hopes."

Daniel squeezed my shoulder.

"Emily..."

I buried my face against Lily's soft blanket. She was finally asleep, her tiny fingers wrapped around the zipper of my sweatshirt, completely unaware that the world around her had just become dangerous.

The police asked us to remain at the airport while detectives interviewed Patricia.

Our flight had already departed without us.

A representative from the airline approached quietly.

"We've rebooked your family on tomorrow morning's flight at no charge."

I thanked her automatically, barely hearing the words.

Seattle suddenly didn't matter.

Keeping Lily safe did.

Nearly two hours later, Detective Harris returned.

His expression told me the interview hadn't gone well.

"She isn't cooperating."

"What did she say?" Daniel asked.

"Mostly that she's the victim."

That sounded exactly like Patricia.

"She claims you've been manipulated by your husband's family."

I rolled my eyes through exhausted tears.

"She always says that."

"She also insists your father wanted her to raise Lily."

I looked at him in disbelief.

"My father died before Lily was even conceived."

"I know."

The detective paused.

"She doesn't seem interested in reality."

A uniformed officer stepped into the room.

"Detective, we've got something."

He handed over a printed report.

Detective Harris read it silently.

His eyebrows lifted.

"What is it?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Your brother called airport security."

My heart skipped.

"He... what?"

"Thirty-four minutes before Patricia ran through the checkpoint."

Hope flared inside me.

Maybe Ryan had tried to stop her.

Maybe he had realized what she intended.

Maybe—

"What did he tell them?" I asked.

The detective hesitated.

"He reported that an unstable woman might try to flee the state with a baby she wasn't legally allowed to have."

The room went completely silent.

My ears rang.

"Excuse me?" Daniel said slowly.

"The unstable woman," the detective continued carefully, "was you."

I felt like someone had punched me in the chest.

Ryan hadn't called to protect us.

He had called to report me.

According to the report, Ryan had identified himself as Lily's uncle.

He told airport security that his sister had been suffering from severe postpartum depression.

That I was emotionally unstable.

That I believed people were trying to steal my baby.

And that there was concern I might attempt to disappear across the country with her.

Every word was a lie.

A calculated lie.

One designed to make authorities question me before Patricia ever reached us.

"If the officers had believed him..." I whispered.

"They would have delayed you," Detective Harris said.

"They might have separated you from your daughter temporarily while they verified the claims."

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

"So this whole thing was planned."

"It appears that way."

The detective slid another document toward us.

"We also spoke with TSA supervisors."

One officer had remembered Ryan.

He'd approached the information desk carrying a photograph.

A recent picture of Lily.

He'd asked whether security should be on alert because "his mentally unstable sister" might resist law enforcement if confronted.

The officer had thanked him for the information—but because there was no court order, no Amber Alert, no custody dispute, and no police bulletin, nothing had been entered into the system.

It wasn't enough to stop us.

So Patricia had taken matters into her own hands.

I suddenly remembered something.

"My phone."

"What about it?" Daniel asked.

"I've had my location shared with Ryan for years."

He looked at me.

"You never turned it off?"

I hadn't.

It had started after our father developed heart problems.

The three of us shared locations in case of emergencies.

After Dad died...

I never thought about disabling it.

"Oh my God."

The detective looked up.

"She didn't need your itinerary alone."

I grabbed my phone with shaking hands.

Ryan still had access.

He had watched us leave home.

Watched us drive to the airport.

Watched us arrive at Terminal B.

Every step.

Every minute.

I disabled the sharing immediately.

Too late.

Much too late.

An hour later, the detective returned with one final update before releasing us to a nearby airport hotel under police recommendation.

"We obtained a search warrant for Patricia's phone."

My stomach tightened.

"And?"

He placed a single printed screenshot on the table.

It was a text conversation.

Ryan: They're through security. Gate B31. She has Lily in the carrier. Hurry.

Patricia: I'll get my granddaughter back.

Ryan: Don't fail this time.

The message had been sent less than five minutes before Patricia charged through the security checkpoint.

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel wrapped an arm around me as tears streamed down my face.

My own brother hadn't just betrayed me.

He had coordinated an attempted abduction.

Detective Harris spoke quietly.

"Mrs. Carter... we're issuing a warrant for Ryan's arrest."

I looked down at the sleeping baby in my arms.

The child my brother had helped endanger.

The child he had once promised to protect.

And in that moment, I realized something far more frightening than Patricia's attack.

May you like

She had been the one running toward us.

Ryan had been the one pulling the strings.
