CHAPTER 5 — OLIVIA'S CONFESSION

CHAPTER 5 — OLIVIA'S CONFESSION
The words hung in the room like smoke.
"I didn't mean to."
Grace stared at her younger sister.
Olivia stood frozen in the doorway, still wearing the hospital wristband around her arm. Her forehead was stitched, her left wrist wrapped in a bright blue cast, and her face was streaked with tears.
Officer Hayes slowly turned toward her.
"What do you mean, Olivia?"
She looked at Grace.
Not at her father.
Not at the officer.
Only at Grace.
"I'm... I'm sorry."
Richard rushed toward her.
"You don't have to say anything."
Hayes immediately stepped between them.
"Let her answer."
Olivia began shaking.
"I didn't cut the brakes."
Grace frowned.
"No one said you did."
Olivia covered her mouth.
Realizing what she had just admitted.
The room fell silent.
Hayes spoke gently.
"Then tell us what happened."
Olivia looked as though she wanted to disappear.
"I... I saw them."
"The brake line."
"The tools."
"The rag Dad was using."
Richard's face drained of color.
"Olivia."
His voice came out as a warning.
She flinched.
Grace had seen that reaction before.
She had lived with it her entire life.
Fear.
Not respect.
Fear.
"I woke up that morning because I couldn't sleep," Olivia whispered.
"I went into the garage to get my bicycle."
Her eyes filled again.
"Dad didn't hear me."
Grace's heartbeat quickened.
"He was underneath the Lincoln."
"He had a flashlight."
"He was holding a knife."
Richard interrupted.
"I was replacing an old hose."
Hayes didn't even look at him.
"Continue."
Olivia nodded weakly.
"I asked what he was doing."
"He jumped."
"He told me never to tell anyone I'd seen him."
Grace felt her stomach tighten.
"What exactly did you see?"
Olivia squeezed her eyes shut.
"He... he cut something."
"The brake line?"
A tiny nod.
"No..."
Grace whispered.
Olivia broke down.
"I thought he was fixing it!"
"He told me it had cracked."
"He said he had to cut the damaged part before replacing it."
Richard closed his eyes.
His breathing became uneven.
"I believed him."
She looked at Grace through tears.
"When you said the car smelled funny..."
"I wanted to tell you."
"But Dad looked at me."
Grace remembered.
That look.
The one she'd ignored.
The silent warning across the front seat.
Then Olivia whispered the sentence Grace had replayed over and over in her mind.
"I only told him because I thought he already knew."
Grace finally understood.
Olivia hadn't been talking about the apartment.
She'd been talking about the garage.
She had quietly told Richard that Grace had noticed the smell.
She thought she was helping.
Instead...
Richard realized Grace might become suspicious.
Grace looked at her father.
"So you refused to stop."
He said nothing.
"You knew something was wrong with the car."
Still nothing.
Officer Hayes stepped closer.
"Mr. Bennett..."
"I'm placing you under arrest for attempted homicide."
Before anyone could react—
Richard ran.
He shoved past a nurse, sprinted down the hallway, and crashed through the emergency exit.
Alarms blared throughout the hospital.
Hayes chased after him.
Two security guards followed.
Grace struggled to sit up.
"Grace, don't!"
Aunt Meredith tried to stop her.
But Grace couldn't look away from the window.
Outside...
Rain poured across the parking lot.
Richard slipped on the wet pavement.
Officer Hayes tackled him before he reached his truck.
The handcuffs clicked shut.
For the first time in Grace's life...
Her father looked powerless.
He turned toward the hospital windows.
Their eyes met.
There was no apology.
Only fear.
Two days later, the investigators returned.
Grace expected questions about the crash.
Instead, Hayes placed a thick folder on her bedside table.
"We executed a search warrant."
He opened the file.
Bank statements.
Insurance records.
Property documents.
Grace frowned.
"What is all this?"
"The financial history of your family."
Meredith slowly sat beside the bed.
Hayes took a deep breath.
"Your mother's life insurance paid eight hundred and seventy thousand dollars."
Grace stopped breathing.
"What?"
Richard had claimed they were broke.
For years.
Hayes continued.
"Most of the money disappeared within eighteen months."
Grace turned each page.
Luxury vacations.
A fishing boat.
Casino withdrawals.
Sports betting.
Designer jewelry.
Everything...
Purchased after her mother's funeral.
None of it had gone toward Grace's education.
None.
Then Grace reached the final page.
One transaction stood out.
Apartment Purchase
Owner:
Olivia Bennett.
Purchased when Olivia was only sixteen years old.
Grace slowly looked at her sister.
Olivia burst into tears.
"I didn't know."
"I swear."
"I thought Grandma left it to me."
May you like
Grace believed her.
Because Olivia looked just as betrayed.
