CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE THAT WASN'T DEAD

CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE THAT WASN'T DEAD

Three hours later, the truck rolled into Pine Ridge.

Roger's old farmhouse stood at the end of a gravel road.

Dark.

Silent.

Abandoned.

The place had barely been touched since Helen died.

But that night, lights came on in every room.

Emily was rushed to the local hospital.

The doctors delivered terrifying news.

Another twelve hours without treatment, and she might not have survived.

Roger sat outside her room until sunrise.

Then everything exploded.

Three black SUVs pulled into the hospital parking lot.

Daniel saw them through the window.

The color drained from his face.

"They found us."

Men in expensive suits stepped out.

One entered the hospital and approached the reception desk.

Roger intercepted him.

"Can I help you?"

The man smiled coldly.

"We're here for Daniel Harper."

Roger didn't move.

The man produced a business card.

Roger looked at it.

Then tore it in half.

The stranger's smile vanished.

"What did you just do?"

Roger stepped closer.

"At my age, son, the only thing I'm afraid of is losing more people."

The tension snapped tight.

Then police sirens echoed across the parking lot.

Everyone froze.

Two police cruisers.

Then three.

Then federal agents.

A woman in a navy jacket approached Daniel.

"Mr. Harper?"

Daniel nodded.

Expecting handcuffs.

Instead, she handed him a flash drive.

"We recovered the evidence you tried to send months ago."

Daniel stared at her.

"What?"

"The investigation is active. We arrested six executives last night."

The lawyer standing nearby suddenly looked terrified.

Within seconds, federal agents surrounded him.

Handcuffs clicked shut.

Roger watched in disbelief.

The nightmare that had destroyed this family was finally unraveling.

But he had no idea that his own life was about to change too.
