Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Harper gasped, clutching the ledger to her chest.

"Unlock this door immediately, or I will have my men shoot through it," Graham shouted, his polite, aristocratic facade completely gone.

Harper looked around the room frantically. There were no other doors, and the window led to a terrifying three-story drop onto the stone courtyard below.

Think, Harper, think.

She grabbed a heavy brass fire poker from the hearth. As the sound of Graham’s men kicking the door began to splinter the wood, she smashed the glass of the window, throwing a heavy velvet chair through it to make it look like she had jumped.

Then, she squeezed herself into the small, dark space inside the deep, empty grandfather clock cabinet in the corner of the room, pulling the door shut just as the main entrance splintered open.

Graham stormed into the room, followed by two armed enforcers.

"She went out the window!" one of the guards shouted, looking at the shattered glass and the chair on the balcony outside.

"Find her!" Graham roared, his face twisted in a monstrous rage. "She has the book! If Callum gets his hands on that ledger, we are all dead! Kill her on sight, do you hear me? No witnesses!"

The guards rushed out onto the balcony, leaning over to look at the grounds below.

Taking a massive gamble, Harper slipped out of the grandfather clock, her movements silent as a ghost. She darted out of the open door of the Blue Room, running down the dark hallway back toward the main staircase.

But as she reached the balcony overlooking the grand hall, a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist, twisting her around.

Harper prepared to scream, but a hand clamped over her mouth. She looked up into the intense, flashing eyes of Callum Mercer.

"Did you get it?" he whispered, releasing his grip.

She pulled the heavy leather ledger from under her uniform apron. Callum looked at it, and a terrifying, cold satisfaction washed over his face.

"Good," Callum said, pulling a compact, matte-black pistol from his jacket. "Now, stay behind me. It’s time to end this twenty-year lie."
