CHAPTER 2 — THE NAME HE SHOULD HAVE ERased

CHAPTER 2 — THE NAME HE SHOULD HAVE ERased

Connor didn't dial one of his captains.

He dialed the only man whose number had never changed.

"Tell me Daniel Webb is dead."

Silence answered first.

Then a rough voice.

"No."

Connor's eyes never left Sarah.

"He disappeared four years ago."

"Not disappeared."

The voice lowered.

"He reinvented himself."

Connor's grip tightened around the phone.

"Explain."

"We lost him after the docks. New name. New investors. Small businesses. Illegal clinics. Loan sharks. Human trafficking routes. We thought he stayed overseas."

"You thought wrong."

Connor ended the call before another word could be spoken.

Sarah looked terrified.

"You can't get involved."

Connor almost laughed.

"I already am."

"No, Connor."

Her voice cracked.

"You don't understand him anymore."

Connor slowly knelt until he was eye level with Gracie.

"Sweetheart."

She hugged the grocery bag tighter.

"Can you count to one hundred for me while I talk to your mom?"

She nodded seriously.

"Out loud?"

"Yes."

She began.

"One... two... three..."

Connor turned back to Sarah.

"What did he do?"

Sarah looked toward the busy street.

Like someone expecting a black SUV to appear at any second.

"He found us eight months ago."

Connor's heartbeat slowed.

Danger always began when people spoke quietly.

"He said I belonged to him."

Connor's jaw flexed.

"I told him no."

"So he started taking everything instead."

Sarah didn't cry.

She simply listed the losses.

First...

Her apartment lease suddenly wasn't renewed.

Then every job interview mysteriously disappeared.

Her bank account was emptied through fraudulent withdrawals that no one investigated.

Her car was repossessed despite being fully paid.

Anonymous complaints reached Child Protective Services claiming Gracie lived in an unsafe home.

Every landlord who agreed to rent suddenly changed their mind hours later.

Every employer who wanted to hire her received an anonymous phone call.

Soon she was cleaning offices at night under a false name.

Then even that job vanished.

Connor listened without interrupting.

Every sentence felt less like coincidence...

And more like strategy.

Daniel wasn't trying to kill Sarah.

He was starving her.

Gracie reached forty-three.

"...forty-four... forty-five..."

Connor looked at the little girl.

"Does she know?"

Sarah shook her head immediately.

"She thinks we're poor."

Connor's eyes hardened.

"And you're protecting her from the truth."

"I promised she'd never know what her father really is."

Connor answered quietly.

"She already knows."

Sarah frowned.

Connor pointed toward the grocery bag.

"Children don't learn to remove bananas instead of bread unless fear teaches them."

Sarah covered her mouth.

For the first time...

She cried.

Connor remembered Daniel Webb perfectly.

Four years earlier Daniel had worked inside one of the Malone family's shipping companies.

Polite.

Educated.

Always smiling.

No one suspected that while unloading legal cargo by day...

He moved women and children across state lines at night.

When Connor finally uncovered the operation, Daniel disappeared before the arrests began.

Connor shut the business down.

But he never hunted Daniel himself.

Too many wars.

Too many enemies.

Too many fires demanded attention.

One unfinished job.

One man left breathing.

Now that mistake sat beside a frightened six-year-old holding green bananas.

Connor's phone vibrated again.

This time it was Vincent.

His chief of security.

"We found something."

Connor walked a few steps away.

"Talk."

"Our analysts tracked Sarah's phone."

Connor frowned.

"I know where she is."

"No."

Vincent sounded uneasy.

"I mean someone else tracked it first."

Connor stopped walking.

"When?"

"This morning."

His stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"Daniel's network."

Connor looked around the market.

An elderly couple loaded groceries into their car.

A teenager rode by on a bicycle.

Nothing looked unusual.

That was exactly what worried him.

"They've been watching the market since nine."

Connor's voice became ice.

"How many?"

"Minimum six."

"Visible?"

"No."

"Armed?"

"Definitely."

Connor slowly turned.

Across the street...

A black SUV sat with dark tinted windows.

Engine running.

It hadn't been there five minutes earlier.

Connor slipped the phone back into his coat.

Without alarming Sarah, he crouched beside Gracie again.

"How far can you run?"

She blinked.

"I won the school race."

He smiled.

"I believe you."

Sarah immediately sensed the change.

"What is it?"

Connor looked at her.

"They found you."

The color vanished from Sarah's face.

"No..."

"They're already here."

The SUV's passenger door opened.

One man stepped out.

Then another.

Both wore expensive coats.

Neither looked like a criminal.

One carried flowers.

The other held a stuffed teddy bear.

Connor recognized the trick instantly.

Never arrive looking dangerous.

Arrive looking kind.

People lowered their guard around kindness.

The taller man smiled toward Gracie.

"There you are."

Sarah gasped.

"No..."

Gracie instinctively reached for her mother.

The man lifted the teddy bear.

"Your daddy sent us."

Connor stepped forward.

"No."

The smile disappeared.

"And who are you?"

Connor removed his gloves slowly.

"My name is Connor Malone."

For the first time...

Both men stopped walking.

They knew exactly who stood between them and the little girl.

One quietly reached inside his coat.

Connor's eyes never blinked.

Around the corner, three more men appeared.

Across the street, another SUV rolled silently toward the curb.

Vincent's voice exploded through Connor's earpiece.

"Boss! Thermal drones just picked up twelve armed men closing from both sides!"

Connor calmly pushed Sarah and Gracie behind him.

His hand disappeared beneath his own coat.

Then he spoke six words that froze every gunman in place.

"You should have come for me."

May you like

And in the next heartbeat...

The first shot shattered the market's front window.
