CHAPTER 7 — A Family Chosen by Courage

CHAPTER 7 — A Family Chosen by Courage

The convoy raced through the darkness.

Police cruisers.

SWAT trucks.

An armored rescue vehicle.

And Maxwell's Rolls-Royce close behind, despite Detective Maria Alvarez's repeated warnings for him to stay at the hospital.

"I lost my wife," Maxwell said, gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. "I'm not losing my sister."

Back at the hospital, Ethan insisted on staying with Lily.

"I don't want to be alone."

Lily pulled a chair beside his bed.

"You won't be."

For the first time in weeks, Ethan managed a small smile.

The abandoned Blackwood estate stood at the end of a winding road, surrounded by bare trees and rusted iron gates.

It had been empty for years.

Or so everyone believed.

SWAT officers silently surrounded the mansion.

"Movement on the second floor," one sniper whispered through his radio.

Detective Alvarez raised her hand.

"Go."

The front door exploded inward.

"Police! Search warrant!"

Footsteps thundered through the house.

A door slammed upstairs.

Another officer shouted.

"Two suspects running east hallway!"

Within seconds, Adrian Blackwood burst through a side exit, heading toward a waiting SUV.

He never made it.

Three officers tackled him to the frozen ground.

"You're under arrest!"

As they handcuffed him, Adrian looked directly at Maxwell.

"You think you've won?"

Maxwell said nothing.

His brother smiled bitterly.

"You always got everything."

"The company."

"The respect."

"The family."

"I simply decided it was finally my turn."

Maxwell looked at him with sadness rather than anger.

"It could have been."

Adrian frowned.

"If you'd asked."

Inside the mansion, officers forced open a locked bedroom.

Grace sat tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

But alive.

When they cut the ropes, she collapsed into Maxwell's arms.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"You warned me about Jennifer."

"I didn't listen."

Grace shook her head.

"He fooled all of us."

Jennifer was found hiding in the mansion's basement.

She tried to escape through an old service tunnel.

She didn't get far.

When officers searched her bag, they found passports under three different names, stacks of cash, and documents outlining transfers from offshore accounts connected to Adrian.

The conspiracy that had taken years to build unraveled in a single night.

Over the following months, prosecutors uncovered the full truth.

Adrian had secretly embezzled millions from Blackwood Industries.

When internal audits threatened to expose the missing money, he created another plan.

He recruited Jennifer, who had a history of manipulating wealthy men under false identities.

Together they engineered a relationship with Maxwell after his wife's tragic death.

Their original goal had been financial control.

When Ethan became the sole legal heir to the Blackwood fortune, their plan grew darker.

Jennifer isolated the child.

Abused him.

Tried to convince everyone he was emotionally unstable.

And when Ethan secretly began collecting evidence, she decided to abandon him in the freezing park, believing hypothermia would look like a tragic accident.

Neither of them had expected a homeless little girl to walk by.

The jury later convicted Adrian and Jennifer on multiple felony charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping, child abuse, attempted murder, fraud, and financial crimes.

Neither would see freedom for many years.
