PART III: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE A CHILD

The actress could barely breathe.

The hospital bracelet trembled in her hands.

Every camera was now pointed directly at her.

But she no longer saw the reporters.

She only saw the little girl.

The daughter she had buried in her heart thirteen years ago.

The daughter she had mourned every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every Mother's Day.

The little girl standing before her was no longer a stranger.

She was Emma.

The baby who had vanished from a private recovery clinic after a devastating accident.

The child authorities told her was dead.

The child whose body was never found.

For thirteen years, she had lived with guilt.

For thirteen years, she blamed herself.

And now the impossible stood before her.

Alive.

"Who told you I didn't want you?" the actress whispered.

Emma looked down.

"The woman who raised me."

The answer hit like a gunshot.

"She said you were famous."

"She said I would ruin your career."

"She said you paid people to make me disappear."

The actress staggered backward.

"No."

Tears streamed down her face.

"No, Emma. No."

But somewhere deep inside her, another truth was beginning to surface.

Someone had lied.

And someone had profited from that lie.
