CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN THEY CAME TO TAKE

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN THEY CAME TO TAKE

The annual Veterans Children's Foundation Gala transformed the Grand Regency Hotel into a sea of crystal chandeliers, military uniforms, and black tuxedos.

For the first time in nearly two years...

Victor Ralston arrived with his sons.

Not assistants.

Not bodyguards.

His sons.

The ballroom fell quiet.

People whispered.

"He actually came."

"The boys are smiling."

"Who's the woman with them?"

Hannah walked several steps behind the family in a simple navy-blue dress she had borrowed from Mrs. Alvarez. It wasn't designer. It wasn't expensive.

But she carried herself with quiet confidence.

The boys refused to let go of her hands.

Theo clung to her left.

Oliver to her right.

Noah walked beside her.

Even Mason, who insisted he was "too old for hand-holding," never drifted more than a few feet away.

Victor noticed.

Instead of feeling jealous...

He felt grateful.

The evening seemed almost peaceful.

Until a familiar voice cut through the music.

"Hannah Brooks."

She turned.

Her heart stopped.

Daniel Mercer.

Her ex-husband.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

The same cold eyes she remembered from years of broken promises.

"You've been difficult to find."

Mason immediately stepped between Daniel and Hannah.

"Who are you?"

Daniel smiled.

"I'm Ethan's father."

Hannah's face turned white.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came for my son."

"You lost visitation."

"I hired better lawyers."

He produced a thick envelope.

"I also have a temporary custody order."

The words hit Hannah like ice water.

Victor stepped forward.

"What is this?"

Daniel barely looked at him.

"Family business."

He handed Hannah the papers.

"I'll be collecting Ethan Monday morning."

Theo whispered,

"He's taking Ethan?"

Oliver looked terrified.

Noah grabbed Hannah's hand.

She couldn't speak.

Because she recognized the judge's signature.

Something was wrong.

The date.

The seal.

The paperwork had been filed...

Before Daniel had even submitted his petition.

Impossible.

Unless...

Someone inside the court had helped him.

Victor quietly took the documents.

He read them once.

Then again.

His expression hardened.

"This order is fraudulent."

Daniel laughed.

"Prove it."

Victor looked at his chief legal counsel across the ballroom.

"Margaret."

She hurried over.

"Sir?"

"Verify every page."

She disappeared with the documents.

Daniel smiled confidently.

"You can't stop this."

Victor answered calmly.

"No."

"I probably can't."

He looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"But my attorneys can."

Thirty minutes later...

Margaret returned.

Her face was grim.

"The seal is authentic."

Hannah's knees weakened.

"But..."

Everyone looked up.

"...the clerk's electronic filing record doesn't exist."

Daniel's smile faded.

"The case number belongs to a divorce filed six years ago."

Silence.

Margaret continued.

"This document was professionally forged."

Security quietly surrounded Daniel.

He slowly backed away.

"You don't understand."

Victor's voice became dangerously calm.

"I understand enough."

Hotel security escorted Daniel toward the exit.

As he disappeared through the ballroom doors, he shouted one sentence.

"This isn't about Ethan!"

Everyone froze.

Daniel laughed.

"It's about her!"

He pointed directly at Hannah.

"You have no idea who you hired!"

Then he was gone.

That night...

Nobody slept.

Especially Victor.

May you like

Because Daniel's final words refused to leave his mind.

"You have no idea who you hired."
