Chapter 5: The Door That Wouldn’t Stay Closed

Chapter 5: The Door That Wouldn’t Stay Closed

Ava hit the grand staircase at full speed.

Her bare feet barely touched each step as she ran, Mr. Whiskers clutched so tightly against her chest it almost hurt. The entire mansion seemed to blur around her—gold frames, crystal lights, polished marble—all of it dissolving into one single thought.

He’s here.

Below, the front doors had already been thrown open.

Cold morning air rushed into the foyer.

And then she saw him.

Grant Holloway stood just inside the threshold, rain still clinging to the shoulders of his suit. Behind him, security teams fanned out silently across the entrance hall, moving with controlled precision.

But he wasn’t looking at them.

He was looking up.

At her.

For a second, neither of them moved.

Then Ava whispered, “Dad…”

And something inside Grant broke cleanly in half.

He crossed the room in a few long strides and dropped to his knees before she could reach the last step.

Ava collided into him.

Hard.

Completely.

Like she had been falling for fourteen months and finally landed.

Grant wrapped both arms around her immediately, pulling her so close it was as if he was trying to rebuild every lost day at once.

“I’ve got you,” he said quietly. “I’ve got you.”

Ava’s voice came out muffled against his shoulder.

“I called you… I called you and you answered…”

“I told you I would,” he replied.

Her fingers clenched into his jacket.

“I thought you were gone.”

“I was never gone,” Grant said, though his voice tightened. “I was just too far away.”

A beat of silence passed between them—heavy, fragile, real.

Then Ava whispered the words that had started it all.

“She’s taking your money.”

Grant’s hand slowly tightened around her back.

“I know.”

“And she said I had to leave.”

His jaw hardened slightly.

“No one is sending you anywhere.”

Ava pulled back just enough to look at him.

Her eyes were red, but steady now.

“I hid in the closet,” she said. “They were in your office.”

Grant looked at her closely.

“Did they see you?”

She shook her head.

“No. I called you before they found me.”

A long silence followed.

Then Grant brushed her hair back gently.

“You did exactly what I told you to do,” he said. “You were brave.”

Ava blinked.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t want to be alone.”

“You’re not,” he said firmly.

And for the first time in months, she believed it completely.

Behind them, the atmosphere in the mansion shifted.

Vanessa Carlisle stood at the top of the staircase overlooking the foyer.

She hadn’t moved since the moment she saw Grant on the security feed.

Now she watched him holding Ava like the world outside that embrace no longer existed.

Her nails pressed into the banister.

Nathan Mercer appeared beside her, breathing unevenly.

“This is… not good,” he muttered.

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said quietly, “He shouldn’t have been able to return this fast.”

Nathan swallowed.

“He must’ve bypassed protocol. Frozen assets, emergency clearance… I don’t know how he did it this quickly.”

Vanessa’s eyes stayed fixed on Grant below.

“He didn’t come back because of finance.”

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

She finally looked at him.

“He came back because of her.”

A beat.

Then her expression hardened.

“That means we’re already out of time.”

Downstairs, Grant finally stood, still keeping one hand on Ava’s shoulder.

He looked around the foyer once.

Every detail of the house that used to feel familiar now felt like evidence.

Security moved in behind him.

“Sir,” Ethan said quietly, stepping forward, “we’ve secured perimeter control. No one leaves the estate without authorization.”

Grant nodded once.

“Good.”

Then he looked down at Ava.

“Where are they?”

Ava hesitated.

Then pointed upward.

“Vanessa is in the big room… the one with the piano.”

Grant’s gaze sharpened.

“And Nathan?”

Ava’s voice dropped.

“He was with her yesterday.”

That was enough.

Grant gently guided her toward Eleanor Finch, who had just arrived at the bottom of the stairs, eyes filled with relief and disbelief.

“Take her somewhere safe,” Grant said.

Eleanor nodded immediately and pulled Ava close.

But Ava resisted slightly.

“Dad…”

Grant crouched again.

“Stay with Eleanor for me,” he said softly. “Just for a little while.”

Ava hesitated.

Then whispered, “You’re not leaving again?”

“No,” he said. “Not ever.”

That was all she needed.

She nodded and let Eleanor guide her away.

Grant stood slowly.

The softness in his face disappeared—not toward Ava, but toward everything else.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Sir… what’s your move?”

Grant stared up the staircase.

“I want every exit watched,” he said calmly. “No one speaks to them. No one warns them.”

He paused.

Then added, “And bring me everything we have on Nathan Mercer.”

Ethan nodded.

“And Vanessa?”

Grant’s expression didn’t change.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “is going to explain everything she did… in detail.”

A silence stretched through the foyer.

Then Grant started walking.

Up the stairs.

Each step echoing through the mansion like a countdown.

Above, Vanessa was still waiting.

Still believing she could control what came next.

But the man she had been managing from a distance for fourteen months was no longer absent.

He was home.

And he was done being patient.
