CHAPTER 5 — The Ledger Beneath the Floorboards

CHAPTER 5 — The Ledger Beneath the Floorboards
The room remained silent long after Adrian finished reading the letter.
Only the steady beeping of Nora's heart monitor broke the silence.
Detective Harris looked at Adrian.
"Did you ever know Olivia Carter?"
Adrian searched his memory.
Nothing.
"I've never met her."
"Then why would she write your name?"
"I don't know."
Emma tugged gently on Adrian's sleeve.
"My mommy said rich people don't always have bad hearts."
She looked down.
"But she only trusted one."
Adrian swallowed.
"What else did your mother tell you?"
Emma frowned, trying to remember.
"She said... if something scary happened... I should find the man whose picture was in the newspaper."
"The newspaper?"
Emma nodded.
"You."
Lena's eyes widened.
"Sir... three years ago you were on the front page after opening those free children's learning centers."
Adrian suddenly remembered.
Reporters had photographed him visiting one of the centers.
It had been a single article.
He had almost forgotten it.
But Olivia hadn't.
Two hours later...
A police convoy stopped outside a weathered blue cottage on the edge of town.
Its windows were boarded.
The yard was buried beneath months of weeds and snow.
Emma squeezed Adrian's hand.
"This was home."
Detective Harris unlocked the front door.
Dust floated through the frozen air.
Everything inside remained exactly as if someone had simply... vanished.
A tiny pink cup still sat beside the sink.
Children's drawings covered the refrigerator.
A calendar remained open to October.
The month Olivia disappeared.
Emma walked quietly through the house.
She stopped beside a doorway covered in pencil marks.
"My mommy measured us here."
Tiny lines climbed the wooden frame.
Emma — Age 4
Emma — Age 5
Emma — Age 6
Then one unfinished mark.
No date.
No age.
Emma gently touched it.
"She never got to finish."
Adrian looked away.
The silver key fit perfectly into an old lock behind the garage.
The workshop door creaked open.
Rows of woodworking tools stood untouched.
Everything smelled of cedar.
Detective Harris searched every shelf.
Nothing.
Lena searched the cabinets.
Nothing.
Emma stood quietly in the middle of the room.
Then she smiled.
"Grandpa always said..."
Everyone turned.
"...the strongest trees hide their roots."
Adrian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Emma pointed toward the wooden workbench.
"My grandpa knocked here every morning."
She tapped the floor twice.
The sound changed.
Hollow.
Detective Harris immediately pried up one of the floorboards.
Beneath it rested a weatherproof metal box.
Everyone held their breath.
Inside...
There was a thick black ledger.
Several USB drives.
A handgun wrapped in cloth.
And dozens of photographs.
Detective Harris opened the ledger.
His face drained of color.
"Oh..."
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
"This isn't about property."
He flipped several pages.
"This is evidence."
Names.
Dates.
Bank transfers.
Bribes.
Illegal land seizures.
Shell companies.
Public officials.
Business executives.
Millions of dollars.
Every payment carefully recorded.
Then Detective Harris froze.
One name appeared again and again.
Vanessa Holloway.
But another name appeared even more often.
One that made Adrian's blood run cold.
Richard Ashford.
His father.
The founder of Ashford Global.
Adrian stared at the page.
"No..."
His voice barely existed.
"No..."
Detective Harris slowly closed the book.
"I think your father was involved."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"My father has been dead for eight years."
"That doesn't erase what he may have done."
Emma looked between them.
"Is Grandpa Richard bad?"
Adrian couldn't answer.
For the first time in his life...
He wasn't sure.
That evening...
The USB drives were sent to the cybercrime division.
Within hours...
Another shock arrived.
The files contained hundreds of hidden recordings.
Secret meetings.
Financial documents.
Audio conversations.
One recording began playing.
Richard Ashford's voice filled the room.
"If anyone finds the ledger..."
Static.
"...protect Olivia..."
More static.
"...Vanessa can't..."
The recording suddenly cut off.
Detective Harris frowned.
"It's corrupted."
Another file opened.
This time...
A security camera.
Date:
Eight months earlier.
Location:
Olivia Carter's front porch.
Everyone leaned closer.
Olivia hurried outside carrying Nora.
Emma followed behind.
Then a black SUV stopped.
Vanessa stepped out.
She wasn't alone.
A tall man wearing a dark overcoat followed her.
His face remained hidden.
The video ended seconds later.
Someone had erased the rest.
Detective Harris whispered,
May you like
"They didn't just silence Olivia."
"They erased the evidence."
