CHAPTER 7 — Justice Comes for Everyone

CHAPTER 7 — Justice Comes for Everyone

The room fell into stunned silence.

I looked from the circled photograph to Daniel.

He wasn't angry.

He looked... heartbroken.

"My brother?" he whispered.

Victor nodded.

"The transfers came from a trust hidden behind four offshore companies."

He placed another folder on the bed.

"We followed every transaction."

"The final payment of five million dollars reached Michael Carter's account two days before your trip to the Rocky Mountains."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So it never ended."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"William believed you died twenty-eight years ago."

"When he learned you were alive..."

"He realized Emily was your legal heir."

I finally understood.

"This wasn't just about fifty million dollars."

Victor nodded.

"It was about your entire estate."

Daniel's fortune wasn't measured in millions.

It was measured in billions.

If I and my son were gone...

William would eventually regain control of the Hayes family empire.

Michael had simply been the weapon.

Two days later, the hospital discharged me and my son under armed protection.

The media still believed I was dead.

Daniel intended to keep it that way.

One final trap had been prepared.

News outlets announced that the insurance company had finally approved the fifty-million-dollar claim.

The money would be transferred to Michael Carter at noon on Friday.

Exactly as planned.

Michael couldn't resist.

Despite every warning from Richard Sullivan, he arrived personally at the insurance company's headquarters to sign the final documents.

Ashley came with him.

She had nowhere else to go.

Richard, however, never appeared.

He had vanished.

Or so everyone believed.

At 11:58 a.m., Michael signed the final page.

The insurance executive smiled politely.

"Congratulations, Mr. Carter."

He reached for the transfer authorization.

Before his pen touched the paper, another voice interrupted.

"I wouldn't do that."

Every head turned.

The conference room doors opened.

Daniel Hayes walked inside.

Beside him...

...was me.

Alive.

Holding my son.

The color drained from Michael's face.

The pen slipped from his fingers.

"No..."

Ashley stumbled backward until she hit the wall.

"You..."

She could barely breathe.

"You're dead."

I looked directly into Michael's eyes.

"You certainly tried your best."

Within seconds, federal agents entered the room from every entrance.

Nathan Brooks displayed his badge.

"Michael Carter."

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, insurance fraud, wire fraud, and multiple counts of financial conspiracy."

Michael looked wildly around the room.

"This is a setup!"

Nathan smiled.

"No."

"It's evidence."

Victor placed several binders on the table.

Bank records.

Phone logs.

GPS data.

Satellite photographs.

DNA evidence recovered from my torn coat.

The wildlife photographer's original memory card.

Hospital surveillance footage.

Karen's confession.

Everything.

Karen had been arrested twelve hours earlier while trying to cross the Canadian border.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, she confessed to everything.

Including who hired her.

Michael.

Ashley burst into tears.

"I didn't know..."

Nathan interrupted calmly.

"Actually..."

He opened another folder.

"You transferred two hundred thousand dollars to Karen."

Ashley's mouth fell open.

"I was paying her salary."

"No."

Nathan slid the bank records across the table.

"You marked the transfer as 'completion bonus.'"

Ashley realized she had just incriminated herself.

She collapsed into a chair.

At that exact moment, another set of agents entered the room escorting an elderly man in handcuffs.

William Hayes.

Daniel stared at his younger brother.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Finally, William laughed bitterly.

"You should have stayed dead."

Daniel's expression never changed.

"You tried to kill your own niece."

William shrugged.

"It was business."

Daniel stepped closer.

"No."

"It was greed."

William looked toward me.

"You don't belong in this family."

I answered before Daniel could.

"I belong because my mother loved your brother."

William smiled coldly.

"Love makes people weak."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"It kept Emily alive on that mountain."

Three months later...

The trial captivated the nation.

Prosecutors presented weeks of testimony.

Mountain rescue teams.

Forensic accountants.

Insurance investigators.

Hospital staff.

The wildlife photographer whose telephoto lens had unknowingly captured the shove that changed everything.

Then it was my turn.

I walked slowly into the courtroom.

Every rib had healed.

My wrist had recovered.

Only the scars remained.

I looked directly at Michael before taking the oath.

He refused to meet my eyes.

For six hours, I told the jury everything.

The mountain.

The fall.

The freezing ledge.

Hearing Michael laugh while discussing the insurance money.

Feeling my son kick inside me as I fought to stay conscious.

Finding the strength to survive.

Not once did I cry.

The evidence spoke louder than tears.

After only four hours of deliberation, the jury returned.

"Guilty."

On every count.

Michael Carter was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ashley received twenty-eight years for conspiracy, fraud, and attempted murder.

Karen accepted a plea agreement and testified against the others, receiving a reduced sentence.

Richard Sullivan was captured six months later in Argentina using another false identity. Extradited to the United States, he was convicted on multiple murders, international fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy charges, ensuring he would never again disappear behind another name.

William Hayes lost every asset connected to the conspiracy and spent the remainder of his life behind bars for ordering the murders.

The empire he had tried to steal was gone forever.
