CHAPTER 6 — THE CAMERA THAT NEVER LIED

CHAPTER 6 — THE CAMERA THAT NEVER LIED
Frank slowly surveyed the library.
Nothing seemed disturbed.
Books.
Furniture.
Paintings.
Everything appeared exactly as Margaret had left it.
Then Lily tugged his sleeve.
"Up."
"What?"
"The bird."
She pointed toward an ornate bronze eagle mounted above the fireplace.
Everyone looked up.
Graham frowned.
"My mother installed that after the renovation."
Frank stepped onto the hearth for a closer look.
The eagle wasn't decorative.
A tiny glass lens stared back at him.
Security camera.
Hidden in plain sight.
Daniel blinked.
"I forgot those existed."
Graham hadn't.
Years earlier, Margaret had quietly installed discreet cameras in several historic rooms after priceless wine and artwork disappeared during charity events.
Most had later been disconnected during renovations.
Or so everyone believed.
Frank followed the cable into the wall.
His heartbeat quickened.
"It wasn't disconnected."

Within minutes, the estate's IT manager arrived carrying a laptop.
"If the recorder still works..."
He connected several cables.
The old system hummed to life.
Everyone held their breath.
Folders appeared on the screen.
Dates.
Times.
Continuous recordings.
Frank selected footage from earlier that afternoon.
The library appeared.
Empty.
Fast-forward.
Garden staff passed by.
Nothing.
More fast-forward.
At 5:18 p.m....
Someone entered.
Blair.
She looked carefully over both shoulders before closing the library door.
No smile.
No elegance.
Only urgency.
She walked directly toward Margaret's portrait above the fireplace.
Reached behind the frame.
Removed a small brass key.
The room gasped.
Margaret's missing key.
Blair slipped it into her clutch purse.
Then left.
No hesitation.
No confusion.
As though she had done it before.
Nobody spoke.
Frank replayed the footage.
Again.
The same movements.
The same key.
The same purse.
Blair's face lost all color.
"There's an explanation."
Graham finally spoke.
"I'd love to hear it."
She swallowed.
"Your mother wanted me to have it."
The sentence echoed absurdly through the silent library.
Daniel actually laughed.
Margaret Whitaker had died six months before Blair met Graham.
Everyone realized it at exactly the same moment.
Blair realized it one second later.
Too late.
Frank continued reviewing the footage.
At 7:42 p.m., another recording appeared.
Again, Blair entered the library.
Again she looked around carefully.
This time she held something wrapped in white linen.
She unfolded the cloth.
Inside...
The Whitaker Emerald Pendant.
Its green stone flashed unmistakably beneath the library lights.
Several guests watching the monitor audibly gasped.
Blair carried it toward the antique writing desk positioned against the far wall.
She opened the hidden compartment.
Placed the pendant inside.
Closed the panel.
Then calmly walked out.
Time stamp:
7:43 p.m.
Exactly forty-seven minutes before the cake-cutting ceremony.
Exactly eleven minutes before she humiliated Nora.
Graham closed his eyes.
The sequence suddenly made horrifying sense.
She had hidden the necklace.
Then publicly humiliated the one employee most likely to become the convenient suspect.
If the pendant were "discovered" later in the staff quarters...
Nora's life would have been destroyed.
Her job.
Her reputation.
Her daughter.
Everything.
All to protect the woman wearing the wedding dress.
Graham opened his eyes.
He no longer saw his bride.
He saw a stranger.
And across the room, little Lily hugged Pickle tighter.
She whispered the same words she had spoken before.
May you like
"I told you...
She hid it."
